This lightning talk is about Gerchikov's motivation types, and what you should do when they want to leave your company.

At AgileEE 2011 Mary Poppendieck said a phrase that touched me.
But how should I do that?
And they will stay with you not for money
Recently I found a nice model of the employees’ needs, and I’d like to share it with you
Gerchikov’s motivation model. It’s really simple and that’s what I like the most.
This is the best moment to play with motivation
And it hardly depends on what type is this guy to the left.
This type will do only things he can’t avoid doing. You should keep kicking him all the time.
Thank God he’s leaving! Wish him good luck (and give the last kick).
This type is working only for money. If something isn’t paid for, he will not do it.
If you want to keep him, give him more money to stay. Obvious, huh?
But don’t give him too much. He will leave for competitors anyway.
Maybe it’s time to say goodbye to him too. Wish him good luck as well.
This type cares most of being the best. He’s fond of challenges. Probably he’s leaving because working at your company is dull.
Maybe it’s really dull. Then let him go (to Google or whatsoever). But if you want to keep him…
Give him a challenge. And nice working conditions
This type loves to work in teams. He loves to be appreciated and taken care of. And he will do his best to help his team (his company) win.
Why is he leaving? Probably you didn’t appreciate his contribution. Or he doesn’t feel he’s really important for the company. Or you made him work alone.
Wanna keep a patriot? Appreciate his work, show that he’s important. And give him a nice team to work with.
This type treats his team (product, division) as his own. So he takes complete responsibility for it.
Why is he leaving? Because you took away some of his rights. Or you trespassed his territory.
Give him autonomy. Then give him a goal, and see how he achieves it.
But how could I guess which motivation type is standing in front of me?
