Window condensation is a common problem in many households. When moisture
forms on the interior surface of the window, it can lead to problems such as blocked views, reduced natural lighting, water stains, peeling and damaged interior surfaces,
rotting, and mould growth.
Causes of Window Condensation
Many factors contribute to window condensation. Household activities such as
cooking, washing, and using gas heaters are the main sources of moisture that
increase the level of humidity indoors. Breathing also causes condensation. Experts
say that a person exhales almost 200 millimetres of water vapour per hour when they are awake and 20 millimetres when they are asleep. Bathing or showering
without a fan or using a hot tub or spa also increases moisture levels.
Air Circulation and Window Condensation
Poor air circulation indoors can cause the air to cool down fast. As the air stays still
next to a cool surface, it cools down faster than the air that is supplied to the home.
Studies show that when room air temperature drops, its ability to contain water
vapour weakens. Window treatments like drapes, blinds, and curtains tend to
enclose the air next to the window, significantly affecting the air circulation at home.
Bay and bow windows that stretch from the walls of the home are also prone to air
circulation issues.
Window Condensation Control
Controlling humidity levels indoors is the key in preventing window
condensation. Experts recommend that indoor humidity levels must be from
30 to 50%. If the temperature outside reaches -17º Celsius, average moisture inside the home must not go beyond 25%. Anything higher will
result in condensation build-up on the surface of the glass frame. The
problem may worsen and lead to the growth of fungus.
Experts recommend installing the proper window treatments for areas prone
to moisture. Interior shutters fixtures that have been proven effective in
controlling window condensation in kitchens and bathrooms. They improve
air circulation at home, keeping a steady supply of warm air in the house.
Adding ventilation fans and/or in-house air exchanger system also controls window condensation.
Small droplets in the windows can cause big, expensive problems. They
also interfere with the comfort of living. It is important for homeowners
to know that as soon as the window sweats, it is time to take proper
condensation control measures.
