Matthew 13

• 44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Two Interpretations

Page 8: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Two Interpretations

• 1) Incorrect interpretation– Kingdom of heaven is

glorious treasure– You must sell

everything you have to get access to the Kingdom of God

– Incorrect because you cannot buy entrance to heaven; salvation is a free gift from God

Page 9: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Two Interpretations

• 2) Correct interpretation– Field represents world– Jesus gave everything

to purchase the field so that he might obtain the treasure

– Treasure is us

Page 10: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Who does the field (world) belong to?

Page 11: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Jesus had to buy that field from someone! But WHO???

• (Genesis 1:26) God gave man dominion over all the earth

• (Genesis 3:13) Man forfeited the world to Satan when they obeyed the serpent

• (Matthew 4:8-9) Satan tempted Jesus saying he would give the world back to Jesus if Jesus worshipped Satan

• (1 Peter 1:17-19) Jesus purchased the world not by worshipping Satan, but by dying on the cross

Matthew 13

• 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Page 14: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Similar to the parable of treasure, but pearl is different because…

• To Jews, pearls are not that valuable

• Pearls are valuable to gentiles (non-Jewish people)

• Pearl of great price represents gentiles

• Jesus bought back both Jews and gentiles from Satan

Page 16: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Conclude: Jesus loves you and paid the price to buy you back

Two Hopeful Characters

(Luke 8:40-44)

Page 19: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Luke 8

• 40 So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. 41 And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

• But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. 43 Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.

Page 20: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Two hopeful characters(Luke 8:40-44)

• 1) Jairus (worried for his dying daughter)– Twelve years ago, his

little daughter was born

– Brought great joy and happiness

– Now, the daughter is dying

– Last hope: get to Jesus

Two hopeful characters(Luke 8:40-44)

• 2) Woman– Twelve years ago, a

woman began to bleed uncontrollably

– Suffered through darkness and despair

– Now, spent all her money on medical bills but could not be healed by doctors

– Last hope: just touch Jesus

Touch of Bleeding Woman(Luke 8:45-48)

Page 23: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Luke 8

• 45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?”• When all denied it, Peter and those with him said,

“Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”

• 46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately.

• 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

Page 24: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Touch of Bleeding Woman(verse 45-48)

• Did Jesus know who touched Him?– YES!!!

• Jesus is God so of course he knows– THEN WHY DID HE ASK???

• Jesus asked out loud because he wanted us to understand the importance of who touched him

Page 25: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

One person vs the Crowd

Page 26: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

One person vs the Crowd

• Many people press against Jesus

• Many people pushed and shoved and thronged against Jesus in the crowd

• BUT…

Page 27: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

One person vs the Crowd

• Only ONE person “touched” Jesus

• Her touch was different from press of crowd

• Jesus can minister to one person in a crowd

Page 28: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

One person vs the Crowd

• Question: Many pressing, many thronging, how many are really receiving the touch of Jesus in their life?

• Answer: How many people are reaching out to Jesus by faith?– Whoever reaches out to Jesus by faith

receives touch of Jesus in their life

Page 29: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Conclude: You can sit in a church but if you have no faith in Jesus

you are not receiving the touch of Jesus

Spirit and body: the daughter of Jairus

(Luke 8:49-56)

Page 31: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Luke 8

• 49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.”

• 50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” 51 When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. 52 Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.” 53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead.

Page 32: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Luke 8

• 54 But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” 55 Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. 56 And her parents were astonished, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Page 33: Walk Walk Sunday Lesson 195 & 196 (2007-05-06)

Spirit and Body (Luke 8:49-56)

• At death,– Spirit separates from body

• The body is only a temporary vessel• The spirit is the real you

– Your spirit will last forever– After you die, you either have eternal life in

heaven, or eternal death in hell

• You can go to heaven if you have faith in Jesus
