•  The UWI has invited all Governments already committed to establishing a university college, to do so within The UWI system. The UWI has declared its commitment to working with Governments in facilitating this process

RESEARCH / INDUSTRY ALIGNMENT • Cocoa Research Unit

•  Project funded by the ACP Science & Technology Programme for the establishment of an International Fine Cocoa Innovation Centre - a modern processing facility to showcase and train cocoa farmers in the emerging technologies to produce the best quality cocoa, and also a cocoa factory to develop, brand and find markets for the chocolate products produced.

•  This is an excellent example of linking research to development of an industry.

Carlos Varela visited the Cave Hill campus on July 3, 2015 as part of his meeting with the CARICOM Heads of Government.

•  Panama is seeking to send abroad

2,000 teachers each year for the next four years, and about 1,300 students annually to learn English

President of The UWI’s proven capacity to deliver English as a 2nd Language

UN SG at Fora on Youth, Sustainable Development •  On July 3, 2016 The UWI, hosted

an historic encounter between the Secretary-General of the United Nations and youth of the region.

•  Students were joined by video-

conference and other electronic means from the campuses in Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and from UWI Open campus sites across the region.

•  The Secretary General engaged

students on issues such as climate change, crime and violence, youth unemployment, youth participation and NCDs.

OPEN CAMPUS BSC ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT •  The programme will provide specific competencies required for

effective youth development work that will enable beginners as well as experienced practitioners to develop and/or refine their skills in Youth Development Work, particularly in developing, implementing and evaluating policies and plans on behalf of youth to ensure responsiveness to youth needs.

THE MOORE REPORT •  Cave Hill Campus’ earnings of foreign exchange are almost 5 times that

of the sugar industry and just $11 million less than the earnings from the entire rum industry.

•  Estimated that the Campus accounted for 1.7 % of the Barbados Gross

Domestic Product (GDP) in 2009. By 2012 and 2013, this estimate had risen to 2.2 % of GDP, approximately 0.5 of a percentage point higher than in 2009.

•  Study estimates that Cave Hill Campus generates approximately $200

million in additional economic activity on average (over 2 percent of national GDP), and an estimated $80 million in foreign exchange annually.

•  The Cave Hill Campus is estimated to have generated approximately

$191 million in gross value added activities in 2013

•  Campus’ overseas students would have contributed an estimated $43.8 million to overall national expenditure in the same year or approximately 0.5 % of GDP

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI SERVING GLOBALLY

Dr. Renn Holness

•  Will be honoured by the Canadian Neurological Society with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Quebec at the CNSS Congress June 21-24, 2016.

•  He is the first neurosurgeon in Canada to

perform fetal tissue transplants for Parkinson's disease (1992).

•  Former Dean of the UWI Clinical Training

Dr. Rosemarie Moodie

•  African Canadian Achievement Award for Excellence in Science.

•  Dr Moodie spent 25 years as a neonatologist

and clinical teacher at Sick Kids, serves as a Director on the Board of PACE, and is former head of the Toronto YWCA.

•  She is also a recipient of the Constance
