RESIDENTIAL• The history of building

making in New York city is a fascinating story.

• Designs have been implemented over the years to accommodate the large number of people flocking to the city.• Of course times change and the thus the needs of the populace does as well. New York’s residential buildings tell the story of the city’s very full past.

• These buildings are aptly named as they were built in the previous century using a brown sandstone.

• Having been well built, they remain reminiscent of the past and are still quite popular.

• Brownstones are typically quaint 19th century housing with below-ground entrances and possibly a little garden in the back.

• A New York townhouse is essentially the type of home that others who live in larger areas are used to. Ranging in size they are for accommodating a single family.

• Due to the high premium on space in the city, townhouses are often very expensive

• While the price is high, it is considered worth the privacy that you are afforded.

WALK-UP HOUSING• Walk-up housing is

considered the basic level of housing in New York. There are no extra amenities as resources are spent on maintaining a lower rental price.

• This type of housing was designed to give living space to multiple families.

LOFTS

• These buildings were originally used as centers of industry. This means that they are typically expansive, high ceilinged, and have a feel different than anything else.

• Due to their uniqueness they are hard sought after living quarters, especially among artists.

• It can be difficult to move large items into a loft, so a professional moving company is recommended.

PRE-WAR

• Any building in New York that was built before the end of WWII (circa 1945) is considered pre-war housing.

• Due to their historical nature they have a unique charm.

• The advantages of living in a pre-war building is it’s rustic nature. Hard wood floors are common as well as other timepieces like vaulted ceilings and fireplaces.

POST-WAR• As you may have already

surmised, post-war architecture pertains to buildings built after the war. They are still a timepiece considered to exist from 1945-1980.

• These buildings are recognized by their various colored bricks and are designed to emphasize freedom of movement for it’s residents.

• Often facilities are housed inside the building itself adding to their value.
