Quality of Power

The world is becoming more dependent on computer technologies and computer controlled systems than ever before, and the most daunting issue facing the electronics industry today is to provide the highest level of Power Quality possible to run all these systems.

Computers now control most everything around us each day. They are indispensable in areas such as manufacturing, transportation, medicine and law enforcement and the applications continue to grow.

The Internet also, has changed the way we live to a degree that we could not have imagined just a few years ago.

Page 3: Trans Block Show

Changing system capabilities and requirements

Ten years ago sub-straight wires in a microprocessor were as thin as a human hair with maybe 50,000 discreet components inside the chip operating at 16 Megahertz. (100,000 calculations a second)

Today’s micro’s have sub straights 10,000 times thinner than a human hair with 25,000,000 (million) discreet components operating at 3 to 4 Gigahertz (50 million calculations a second).

Every transient that goes through these systems attacks the microprocessor. Some transients are large enough to fry the microprocessors while others are small and literally imperceptible, yet they too erode the microprocessor on a continual basis.

These microprocessor chips are moving electrons so fast that they have to have heat sinks and fans on them in order to keep cool. Some require cryogenic cooling. In the next ten years these chip and devices will be considered slow.

Down time caused by Line “Surges” and “transients”

The principal enemy to all these systems and the circuit microprocessors is “surges” in the voltages supplied by the power grid to each system. These “surges” are called “transients”.

Thunderstorms and lightning are the most dramatic and destructive causes of power line problems. However, downed utility poles, squirrels, birds, and other small animals can cause shorting out of transformers.

The switching on and off of electrical motors and equipment can also create power surges. These surges are literally surges of overexcited electrons, which contain a lot of energy in short duration bursts.

Today the single most expensive issue facing all types of businesses is keeping systems up and running and avoiding “down time” caused by these “ground transients”

Page 5: Trans Block Show

Downtime costs to the IT industry

In order to avoid this “down time”, companies have built in service contracts that cost them thousands and some cases millions of dollars a year.

One of our nation’s largest home insurance companies recently revealed the information that they spend millions of dollars each year for an outside provider to provide 24/7 technical support for 26,000 agent offices in order to keep them operational.

Imagine all the large mass merchandisers, with hundreds and thousands of Point of Sale Machines (POS) linked to servers, and you can see the potential loss of sales due to down time issues caused by these “surges” locking up this equipment.

Page 6: Trans Block Show

Down Time from surges continues to rise

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) claims that system downtime is doubling in cost every year due to power line sags, surges and transients. It’s not the software.

In 1999 EPRI stated that power sags, surges and transients cost US industry over $50 billion in downtime. In year 2000 the figure doubled to over $100 billion, and then doubled again to over $200 billion in 2001.

THIS IS A PROBLEM BEGGING FOR A SOLUTION

Page 7: Trans Block Show

Bi Directional transients

The current solution for taking away these surges is to attach all electronics to the system ground wire. The ground wire does not shunt all high energy transients to the ground. A large part of these transients become bi-directional and travel back towards the electronic device.

Any electrical disturbance (the transient) when shunted to the ground wire, will go back up the AC ground wire, taking out the system or microprocessor.

Page 8: Trans Block Show

Early solutions not working

In order to stop these transients, manufacturers introduced simple devices known as:

“Surge strips” or “suppressors”, which are basically extension cords with metal oxide varistors (MOV’s) in the line to shunt the surges.

UPS’s (Uninterrupted Power Supply’s) are the same device (a “surge strip”) with a battery added to provide short term power backup when power drops.

Surge strips and UPS’s are inexpensive devices to protect two of the three wires of the AC circuit. The two wires, the hot and neutral, were shunting the damaging energy through the fuse (MOV) to the ground wire. But these MOV’s erode and lose effectiveness quickly and the protection is lost.

Page 9: Trans Block Show

Electrical Engineers

Current safety agencies and the NEC (National Electric Code) state there cannot be any “impeding” of the ground wire because if a protection device were to fail, the person using the device could become the ground and be electrocuted.

The solution to the limitations of these surge protection devices has been a "dedicated circuit" which is a separate AC ground wire run all the way to the main electrical panel located next to a building’s power transformer. High neutral line voltage and high levels of spikes and transients are caused by many household devices. Bypassing all the sub-panels and installing a "dedicated circuit" was thought to solve the problem but was proved to be wrong and also too expensive.

Page 10: Trans Block Show

A New Direction is needed

TransBlock research had discovered that the easiest and most

direct solution would be to find a method to pull all transients away from the ground wire.

TransBlock developed a device to protect the ground wire from transients. This device draws transients completely and safely away from the ground wire. This patented protection device absorbs bi-directional voltage from the ground wire as the voltage tries to reverse itself up the ground wire. It also dissipates the voltage that would otherwise be picked up by sensitive electronic devices and cause lock ups and system failures.

TransBlock passive blocking technology

TRANSBLOCK’s patented technology is the only known true passive blocking technology that can be connected in series with the ground line of electronic equipment.

Underwriter’s Laboratory will not allow an active device (moving parts) to be placed on the ground line because of intrinsic safety concerns. Thus, there is no other way to solve the ground transient problem safely without using TRANSBLOCK’s patented circuit.

TRANSBLOCK is the first and only patented device that solves the transient problem by controlling the direction of harmful transient currents away from sensitive circuitry.

What TransBlock can provide customers

The application of TransBlock’s patented technology will

result in : Savings on tech support Increased system Protection and Safety Increased Productivity More Sales Less employee frustration Less problems for IT managers Greater connectivity Fewer “lost” documents and records

New Construction Mandate from UL for 2008

Underwriters Laboratories has mandated that beginning in 2008 all new home and office construction in the US must have up to date surge protection on the AC outlets, breaker boxes and will have to meet very strict guide lines for quality and protection.

UL will no longer put their UL approved sticker on surge strips and UPS’s using the old technology due to the potential of fire when they fail.

So this means the “old methods” will no longer be approved and TransBlock’s patented technology is ready to fill the void.

Warranty Repairs

Warranty Repairs Cost automotive manufacturers millions of dollars a year. More electronic devices and microprocessors are being deployed in automotive modules to control and run the vehicle. Ground transients are costing giant car manufacturers like General Motors considerable expense and downtime. These ground transients come from the alternator and other electrical and electronic loads switching on and off. These transients will cause all sorts of electronic modules within the vehicle to fail, or lock up with no apparent warning….Fuel injection, ABS, HVAC, Stereo and CD players, ABS, Air bag sensors, On Star and navigational systems, are all affected. The dealer replaces the module, returning the defective part to the manufacturer. When the manufacturer checks the module, it’s out of the vehicle. Then the manufacturer discovers there is no apparent reason for the failure. When the part is out of the vehicle, it is not subject to the influence of transients. These “ground transients” have caused the microprocessor to lock up while the part is in the vehicle.

The electrical ground transient may not cause failures in all cases, however whenever there is a lockup it weakens the chip or microprocessor so that it could fail completely the next time the transient occurs, if the module is not replaced with a new one.
