DESCRIPTION

PulpWorks, Inc. (PulpWorks) was founded in response to a plastic pollution crisis. The company designs and manufactures environmentally friendly packaging for the consumer packaged goods industry. PulpWorks' packaging is comprised of 100% recycled pulp and paper. The packaging contains no plastics or adhesives of any kind and can be discarded in curbside compost or recycling bins. The company filed a patent for a package design that will enable its customers (Walmart, Procter & Gamble, Clorox, Revlon) to replace their plastic (PVC) blister packaging with PulpWorks' planet friendly alternative, the “PW-Pack”. PVC is a major presence in landfills in the USA and around the globe. Over 7 billion pounds per year are dumped with estimates that 70% of that is derived from discarded blister packaging. The oceans, too, have become dumping grounds for discarded plastic packaging with the north Pacific Ocean containing an island of floating plastic twice the size of Texas. The PW-Pack has numerous advantages over the PVC blister pack beyond the environmental ones. There is no premium to the customer for "going green" from a cost standpoint as the PW-Pack is priced competitively with the traditional PVC blister pack. It is safe and easier to open than the traditional blister pack. Hospital emergency rooms see more than 60,000 cases per year due to injuries incurred while opening blister packs. The PW-Pack can be designed, branded and molded into different shapes and sizes, and, because it is not connected to petroleum price fluctuations, it provides long term price stability for the buyer. Converting to the PW-Pack can be seamless, presenting no additional mechanical or logistical issues for the customer. Its nesting and stacking capabilities can reduce transportation costs. The PW-Pack is an economical, feasible, and scalable alternative to the PVC blister pack.

THE TEAM - THE COMPANY

THE PROBLEM - THE TARGET

• PVC (including “blister packs”) is responsible for 70% of the toxic waste in landfills each year.

• PVC blister packs are also responsible for more than 60,000 emergency room visits each year due to injuries sustained while attempting to open them.

• 7 billion pounds of PVC are discarded every year in the USA alone.

• A typical blister pack (see photos on left) can create 140 tons of toxic PVC waste per year.

• When burned, PVC forms dioxins, a highly toxic group of chemicals that build up in the food chain, can cause cancer as well as harm the immune and reproductive systems.

• Roughly 33% of plastic is for single use . . . and then thrown away.

• Approximately 85% of total global plastic used is not recycled.

• Plastic has the potential to stay in our environment for eternity.

• Plastic negatively impacts over 270 species of animals and birds.

THE “PW-PACK”•PulpWorks' flagship product, the patent-pending "PW-Pack", is an environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic (PVC) blister pack at a competitive price. There is no premium to being “green” for those who choose the PW-Pack.

•The PW-Pack is comprised of two pieces of compostable, biodegradable and recyclable material – molded pulp and cardboard – that are connected by interlocking tabs, without benefit of adhesives, tape, or staples.

•This creates a single-use package that highlights the saleable article which is nestled securely within a cavity in the molded pulp component.

•The PW-Pack eliminates waste on land and sea (e.g., the oceanic gyres) and reduces the overall volume of toxic PVC waste created by blister packs each year.

•The PW-Pack responds to an urgent and compelling need for improved packages that embody the intent of a blister pack but have a significantly reduced negative impact on the environment while providing consumers with enhanced functionality and design features.

THE PROBLEM - THE SOLUTION

THE KEY FEATURES•For the client, the PW-Pack is a cost-effective green alternative to the plastic (PVC) blister pack and a bold statement about the role of sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

• For the consumer, the PW-Pack provides enhanced functionality and design. It is safe and easy to open. Each PW-Pack is custom designed and provides protection for the article(s) nestled inside. It reduces excess packaging and is easily composted or recycled.

•For the client’s supply chain, its nesting capabilities can reduce inbound transportation costs.

•Comprised entirely of recycled paper, the PW-Pack‘s long-term price stability is secure in that it’s not connected to petroleum price fluctuations as plastics are.

“Consumers will often show more loyalty (repeat purchases) to companies exhibiting responsible practices in packaging.”

“Given a choice between otherwise equal competitors, consumers and customers will choose the sustainable packaging user.”

“People are aware and offended by wasteful packaging. There is an assumed connection between costs and excess packaging.”

THE CUSTOMERS – THE REVENUE

• PulpWorks is in various levels of planning and discussion with the companies listed above – as well as many others.

• The categories targeted are cosmetics & personal care; electronics; household; office products; pet care; kitchenware; software and footwear.

• Their collective spend on blister packaging is more than $10 billion annually.

PulpWorks will generate revenue through each of the following models, depending upon what works best for its customers:

Turnkey Outsourcing

• In this scenario, the customer provides the saleable article.

• PulpWorks provides all other goods and services necessary to create and deliver a finished product to the customer on time and within spec.

• This includes the design of the package, the paper and pulp components of the PW-Pack itself; the assembly of the retail product; and the delivery of that finished product to the customer’s designated location.

Package-only Sales

• PulpWorks will ship the empty PW-Pack directly to the customer, or indirectly via their sales and distribution channels.

• The customer will provide the final assembly.

Licensing

• PulpWorks will license the PW-Pack technology.

Page 5: Think Beyond Plastic - PulpWorks, Inc

THE ITEM

•Virtually any object can be featured in the PW-Pack.

•No limitations on height, width or depth.

•Ideal objects are beauty and personal care items as well as other small consumer goods typically packaged in blister packs.

•Object is nestled tightly in the molded pulp cavity.

THE MOLDED PULP BACKING PIECE

•Created from waste newsprint or corrugated and water.

•Cavity is designed to hold the object securely.

•Slots for interlocking face card.

•Die cut hole positioned to keep package perfectly vertical when hung at retail.

THE FACE CARD

•Printed on recycled paper with soy-based inks.

•Die cut window(s) to feature the product inside.

•Tabs for interlocking with backing piece.

•Branding per client’s artwork.

•Custom designed for each product.

THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS

•Begins with the molded pulp backing piece.

•Item is inserted in the cavity.

•Face card is inserted into slots.

•If requested, paper staples can be added to the assembly process.

•Entire assembly process is automated utilizing machinery developed specifically for PulpWorks.

THE COMPETITIONCompanies that produce blister packs today are our most formidable competitors. Not only do they manufacture a cost-competitive and long-entrenched alternative to our PW-Pack, but also they, too, are looking at the changes that need to be made in order to be competitive in “tomorrow’s” much greener packaging environment.

• Blisters, Inc. has grown to become one of the country’s larger custom packagers, providing low-cost, blister packaging solutions for Fortune 500 companies.

• They specialize in the design of blisters, clamshells, and trays.

• They, like their competitors in this category, would be capable of mimicking the PW-Pack and offering it to their customers as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional blister packaging.

• Saddle Creek has more than 2,000 experienced associates.

• They operate over 14 million square feet of warehouse space nationwide.

• They have 28 strategic locations nationwide, ISO certification, as well as freight services.

• Like their competitors in this category, Saddle Creek has the capabilities to create a version of the PW-Pack.

PulpWorks relies on the protection of its provisional utility patent (soon to be reinforced) as well as non-disclosure agreements (NDA's) and other formal arrangements (e.g., licensing) to ensure, maintain and protect the Company ’s intellectual property. The first mover advantage combined with stellar customer service and competitive pricing will be significant factors in maintaining a lead on the competition, as will an emphasis on and campaign to make the "PW-Pack" trademark synonymous with environmentally friendly packaging.

SUSTAINABILITY

TODAY

•PulpWorks uses a shared office space at the Renaissance Center of San Rafael, a non-profit small business development center. The Renaissance Center was renovated in 2012 and now utilizes solar power, waterless toilets, and numerous other environmentally friendly features to reduce the carbon footprint of the facility.

•The PulpWorks team uses public transit for approximately 90% of its business-related travel.

•PulpWorks designs and manufactures retail packaging that is completely compostable - based on new standards due in 2013, which are more stringent and will no longer allow some plastics to be called compostable. (Our supply chain is entirely outsourced. Printing, pulp molding, assembly, and distribution – are performed by our strategic partners in each of these functional areas.)

•Our face cards are printed on recycled paper, and the ink used is soy-based, creating no pollution in the plant’s waste stream.

•Air drying – when practical – rather than mechanical heating of the finished product at the pulp molding plant leads to a reduction in the amount of energy used in molding process.

•North America is the preferred location for pulp molding operations. (Note: The diversion of merely one ton of waste paper per month from its trans Pacific voyage results in a savings of more than 4,500 lbs of CO2 annually.) FUTURE

•The future PulpWorks office will be designed following as many LEED requirements as possible. We will educate all of the employees on the value of that and on how to maintain the standards – including equipment and supplies. (Led by Elena who is a LEED Green Associate.)

•PulpWorks will require each of their supply chain partners to provide goals for reducing their respective footprints and to be more efficient.

•PulpWorks will investigate which certification(s) is most appropriate for our business to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability. (Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Program and Certified B Corporation currently top the list of options.)

•The calculation of our own footprint is the next step in our goal-setting process designed to keep our supply chain as clean as possible.
