You can now read

magazines, newspapers, and books

on new technology. E.g. iPad,

Kindle, PC.

Is there a future for magazines?

I personally don’t think

that there is a future for

magazines. As technology is becoming

more advance,

people would be able to

access their magazines digitally.

How have audience habits changed when consuming media?

Do you feel consuming digital content has changed your reading habits?“Yes, many times I feel I’m dealing with information overload. I tend to read less books or long in-depth articles – my first instinct is to scan headlines and check social networking news.”

Cheryl, music producer, Singapore

When I want to know the latest news or find the

latest music, I tend to go online on my laptop or on my phone. I have never in

my life brought a magazine.

Less people are buying hard copies of magazines. More people are buying digital magazines and finding their news on the internet (the news you would usually fine in a magazine).

Websites like

Digital Spy, are

just like

magazines. But

they are online

and free to

browse.

There are lots of different

articles online that you

would find in a magazine:

People in the near future will be purchasing their magazines on the internet. The magazines will be made by the company of the magazine on a kind of software. The digital magazines will be sold on the internet, just like they would be done in a shop. They would be cheaper to sell over the internet as the company does not have to pay the costs for materials.

What do audiences think of magazines?

Most people that buy magazines (e.g. NME) are the younger generation. The audience read them

like a book, but mainly look for an article they are

personally interested in. Most people like the

pictures and like to read the latest news in

magazines. What most people don’t like is the long

articles and some advertisements.

People enjoy the advertisements in magazines on digital devices, people say

“ads are much more interesting, and are much more

eager to engage”.They are easy to navigate and

last forever. The only thing people are worried about is “what if my device that I am

reading my magazine runs out of battery when I'm out”. They

are very trustworthy and reliable. I personally would

prefer a digital magazine as I could take hundreds of them

on just one device (e.g. Kindle)

Have circulation figures

dropped/increased?

Magazine ABCs, music and

film: NME down 14.3 per cent

In a statement IPC said that

despite the drop NME

“continues to be an exemplar

of a modern multiplatform

media brand”, serving its

audience “via social media,

on TV, radio, mobile, through

live events and in print and

reaches over one million

consumers each week”.

Sales of IPC Media’s music

title NME fell 14.3 per cent

to 29,020 in the first half of

2011.

I think that circulation figures have dropped as more and more people are accessing their news on digital devices, mostly the internet.

As magazines are going digital, so will the advertisements. Video advertisements can be in digital magazines, this can

be more fun and interactive for the audience.

“Digital Magazine Ads Grab More Attention than Print”Douglas Quenqua

"Readers feel that the ads are much more

interesting, and are much more eager to engage

with them because they are interactive" said

Jeanniey Mullen

What will happen to the advertising in the magazines?

Page 9: The Future of Magazines

In my opinion I believe that all magazines will be on digital devices. The magazine advertisements will still be in the magazines, but they will be more interactive. I think circulation figures would increase as the digital magazines would be more fun, this would mean more people would buy them. If you wanted your latest magazine, you wouldn’t have to leave the house, you’d be able to buy and download them on the internet from the digital device (iPad, Kindle).

In your opinion what is the future of the

magazine industry?
