with KiwiRail planned further rail
upgrades
● Ongoing track duplication

● Upgraded stations
● Upgraded, then new rolling stock
4

infrastructure improvements to speed
development of the Auckland network
● Key improvements included:

These organisations worked together to
transform Auckland rail
● Auckland Transport, KiwiRail,
subcontractors and Transdev worked
together to implement NZ$1.6 billion
upgrade
● Significant investment: track works,
re-signalling, station upgrades and
electrification to meet the increased
demand for travel
● Provided for network capacity
enhancements and electrification, as
well as a fleet of new trains
manufactured by CAF
8
And the customers reap the benefits
● 2010 – Onehunga line re-opens
● 2012 – Manukau branch line opens
● 2012 – integrated ticketing introduced
for rail
● 2012 – resignalling underway
● 2013 – Wiri depot opens
● 2013 – first electric trains arrive
● 2014 – first electric trains into service
Plus ongoing station improvements and
timetable increases

But ultimately it’s the people who made
it work!
Shayne Mccormick, Driver Trainer,
Transdev
“Our staff have really bought into the
new electric trains. It’s great. I think
we’re in for a really bright future,
especially once the whole fleet is
electric.”
10
But ultimately it’s the people who made
it work!
Bastiaan Luijhs, EMU driver,
Transdev
“It’s a bit different driving the new
electric trains, but once you get used
to the new features, it’s just like
driving any other train. For our
customers though it’s a much
smoother ride.”
11
But ultimately it’s the people who made
it work!
Jonathan Tulitt, Depot Operations
Manager – Wiri, Transdev
“There’s had to be a lot of co-
ordination between all the different
stakeholders – CAF, KiwiRail,
Auckland Transport and our internal
teams – but everyone has worked
really well together.
Everyone has the same goal – to
provide a really good electric train
service for Auckland.”
12
But ultimately it’s the people who made
it work!
Andrew Coolee, EMU Test Engineer,
CAF
It’s been very good to work with
Transdev on this project – quite
different to what I’ve been used to in
the past.
Any issues that come up, we solve
straight away, and always think about
the ultimate outcome.”
13
But ultimately it’s the people who made
it work!
Brian Hyde, Wiri Control Supervisor,
Transdev
“I really love working here at Wiri in
the Control Room. Every day we are
learning something new. It makes it
very interesting and enjoyable.”
14
But ultimately it’s the people who made
it work!
Mike Yeoman, EMU Project Lead,
Transdev
“There’s been some fantastic
teamwork on this project. CAF,
KiwiRail, Auckland Transport, the
RMTU and ourselves have all worked
together in a spirit of professionalism
to make this project a success.
On my side, it’s been easy to get
people’s buy-in. They’ve all been
keen to get involved and have taken
ownership of any issues to solve
them quickly.”

So where are we at now?
● Wiri depot fully operational
● Traction conversion for Drivers and
Train Managers ongoing
● Resignalling using ETCS cab
signalling system, provided by
Invensys / Siemens. Network
essentially complete
● 25kV AC electrified overhead network
currently being implemented across
the network.
● Transdev have accepted 4 EMUs from
AT / CAF
● Currently there are 16 EMUs stabled
at Wiri
● Testing underway to remove limitations
to operations, e.g. 6-car operations
16
Next steps 2014 / 2015…
● Electric trains will be added to the
Manukau line August / September
● Full electric train weekend timetable
October (dependent on completion of
overhead line equipment installation).
● Southern line services will be next in
line for electric trains
● Electric trains will be added to the
Western line in 2015
● Diesel fleet transition plan under
agreement with AT.

Increasing Britomart’s capacity for the
future
● Britomart capacity currently limited by
the single point of entry and exit via
the eastern tunnel
● The solution is the City Rail Link
● The CRL will allow for more frequent
services, and fewer delays
● Opportunity for more direct services
● Many services more direct; major
increase in people within 30 minutes
of a city station

Improving the customer experience
To complement world class trains and
punctuality, improve the customer
experience:
● Current focus – seamless dual fleet
running and meeting customer
expectations during this period
● Embed a truly customer-centric culture
● Implement Going for Care customer
experience training
● Work with AT to deliver better customer
information with increased social media
and customer apps
● Use customer panel to gather feedback
and suggestions for ongoing
improvement

We will be the envy of a lot of cities…
● Not many cities have a brand new
fleet like Auckland will have soon
● The City Rail Link will allow for more
frequent services, and fewer delays
(currently we are restricted to 36
movements an hour out of Britomart)
● Once the track and station upgrades
have been completed, and the
electric train fleet is fully operational,
Auckland will be the envy of a lot of
cities.
