Frequently Asked Questions

Page 9: Sun Film Turns Windshield Into Heads Up Display

Sun Innovations, Inc.

Q2. Why doesn't a standard projector display the image it is projecting when it is projected onto a glass surface?

A2. Glass is intrinsically transparent to "any light." So when any light frequency is projected onto glass it will just go right through the glass, without leaving "any image" on the glass. For glass to be clear, it has to be transparent to visible light - so the light is going to pass right through the glass.

Q3. When Sun Innovations, Inc. - MediaGlassTM Film is applied to a Clear Glass Surface - what process occurs that makes the image visible?

A3. The Sun Innovations, Inc. - MediaGlassTM Film contains special Phosphor Crystals which absorbs the light emitted from the projector and then re-emits the light into visible light.

By Capturing and Re-Emitting all three of the primary colors - Red + Blue + Green - The Full Color Image will be displayed on the film - which also would then be displayed on the glass affixed to the film.

Page 10: Sun Film Turns Windshield Into Heads Up Display

Q4. Is a Special Projector needed to excite the phosphor layers of the film and display the full color image.

A4. The projector must be able to project light at a very low frequency - that is in the range that excites the Red - Blue - Green phosphors.

Because the image that is displayed on the Film is not created by the Projector - it is created by the phosphors in the film.

Q5. So what specifically is being projected from the Projector?

A5: It is a source of energy that will excite the phosphor crystals within the film. The light being emitted from the projector is of a very low frequency - it is a blue / violet light that can be absorbed by the phosphor crystals and converted into RGB light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Page 11: Sun Film Turns Windshield Into Heads Up Display

Sun Innovations, Inc.

Q6. What is unique about Phosphor Crystals and what does it mean to "Excite" the Phosphor Crystals.

A6. Phosphor Crystals absorb the blue / violet light (energy) emitted from the projector - and then as long as the frequencies of the blue / violet lights (energy) emitted from the projector - match the frequency that excites the individual R-G-B phosphors - the "Excited" Phosphor crystals - will then re-emit the energy it has absorbed in the form of Photons / RGB light.

The Phosphor Crystals within the film "glow" - you can pumped them up if you will when they are excited by the Selective Excitation Wavelength from the projector - creating an Emissive Light: Red - Blue - Green based on the wavelength emitted. The Selective Excitation Wavelengths of the three primary colors RGB = R: 405 nm / B: 428 nm / G: 450 nm and it becomes an Emissive Display (Emissive means it displays RGB colors).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q7. What is the composition of each layer of the Sun Innovations, Inc. - MediaGlassTM Film.

A7. The Sun Innovations, Inc. - MediaGlassTM Film - consists of up to 4 layers of film - depending on whether the desired color image output is 1, 2 or 3 colors.

If the desired image is a Full Color image - then the film would have 4 layers: 1. Red 2. Green 3. Blue 4. UV Filter.

Each layer of film is comprised of Phosphor Crystals that when excited - by low frequencies of energy - absorb the energy and then re-emits the energy or "Glows" in the form of R-G-B light.

And since the phosphor crystals are transparent, an image is displayed on the glass that is transparent - that you can "see-through"

Frequently Asked Questions

Page 13: Sun Film Turns Windshield Into Heads Up Display

Sun Innovations, Inc. MediaGlassTM Film

Sun Innovations, Inc.

Q8. What is the purpose of the 4th layer of film - the UV layer?

A8. The UV layer cuts off any excitation of the RGB layers of the film - from the solar rays emitted from the sun - because solar power can also excite the phosphors.

So using the UV blocking layer of the film it cuts off the excitation from the solar power of the UV rays. Since the UV rays from sun covers such a broad range of frequencies it could excite all three RGB layers / colors.

Q9. Is the film that is used for the Heads-Up Display the same film that is used for Retail Storefront and In-Store Displays?

A9. It depends. The Heads-Up display typically is a single color - Blue - which means only a single layer of film - the blue layer - would need to be applied to the windshield. Normally the single color of blue is used as only one color is needed to display information such as would be displayed in a vehicle. Since only a single layer of film is used - the cost would be less than the RGB film which would include 3 layers.

Q12. Before buying Sun Innovations, Inc.'s - MediaGlassTM Film - what role does the projector play in creating / displaying the images.

A12. In DLP projectors, the Image is created by microscopically small mirrors laid out in a matrix on either one or three semi-conductor chips. Each mirror represents one or more pixels in the projected image and the number of mirrors corresponds to the resolution of the projected image.

Most projectors that are used for business purposes are:

1) Single-Chip DLP Projectors - Utilizes a lamp shinning through a spinning color wheel onto a matrix of mirrors to produce the various colors of an image on an opaque display

2) Three-Chip Projectors - Utilizes a prism to split light from the lamp, and each primary color of light / Read - Blue - Green / is then routed to its own DLP chip, then recombined and routed out through the lens.

Page 19: Sun Film Turns Windshield Into Heads Up Display

Single-Chip DLP Projectors------------------------------------------In a projector with a single DLP chip, colors are produced either by placing a color wheel between a white lamp and the DLP chip or by using individual light sources to produce the primary colors, LEDs or lasers.

The color wheel is divided into multiple sectors: the primary additive colors: 1) Red, 2) Green and Blue and in many cases white (clear).

The DLP chip is synchronized with the rotating motion of the color wheel so that the green component is displayed on the DMD* when the green section of the colorwheel is in front of the lamp. The same is true for the red, blue and other sections.

(*DMD - Digital Micro Device - which are microscopically smalls mirrors laid out in a matrix on a semiconductor chip that creates the image that is displayed by the projector. Each mirror represents one or more pixels in the projected image. For instance a displayed image with a resolution of 1024x768 - has a matrix of 1024 columns of mirrors on one axis and 768 rows of mirrors lined out in each of the 1024 columns. These mirrors can be repositioned rapidly to reflect light through the lens.)

The colors are thus displayed sequentially at a sufficiently high rate that the observer sees a composite "full color" image. Most projectors rotate at 10X the frame rate.

Additionally, multi-color and LED-based and laser based single-chip projectors are able to eliminate the spinning wheel and minimize the rainbow effect since the pulserate of LEDs and Lasers are limited by physical motion.

Three-chip DLP projectors have no color wheels, and thus do not manifest this rainbow artifact.

Light Source --------------------DLP technology is light-source agnostic and as such can be used effectively with a variety of light sources. Historically, the main light source used on DLP display systems has been a replaceable high pressure Xenon Arc Lamp unit, whereas most pico category (ultra-small) DLP projectors use high-power LEDs or lasers as a source of illumination.

LED-based DLPs--------------------------The first commercially- available LED-based DLP HDTV came out by Samsung in 2006. The LED-based DLPs virtually eliminated the need for lamp replacement and eliminated the need for the color wheel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ordinary LED technology does not produce the intensity and high lumen output characteristics required to replace arc lamps.

The special Patented LEDs used in Samsung projectors and TVs are PhatLight LEDs, designed and manufactured by US based Luminus Devices. A single RGB PhatLight LED chipset illuminates a projection TV. The PhatLight LEDs are used in the ultra-compact DLP front projector commonly referred to as a "pocket projector."

Laser-Based DLPs----------------------------The first commercially available laser based DLP projection system was released in 2008 which also eliminate the use of the color wheel. Three separate color lasersilluminate the DMD.
