Executive Summary (2011)

Steven Turner is a dedicated, driven, and internally motivated business professional. Through hard work and determination he is currently attaining his B.S. in the field of Acquisition and Contract Management at Athens State University. This trek has given him a higher degree of employability with far reaching avenues of opportunity. The value of ethics and responsibility has always been the center-point of his life creating a core continually hardened with integrity.

Vision

My "Vision" is to finish my B.S. in Acquisition and Contract Management in 2013. This is when I plan on fielding for my knowledge, background, and abilities as a highly employable business professional while not selling myself short in compensation as such. I will develop all the requirements of becoming an Acquisition and Contract Manager for the U.S. government and related contractors. Thence, I will continue my studies thru a Masters degree in a related field. It is with this path that I will ensure both a job and financial security for myself along with my wife for years to come as we look forward to our retirement plans.

Guiding Principles

Always take time to do the right thing. Consider the future with every decision. Learn ways to learn more. Be true to myself and my beliefs. Skills and knowledge will always be acquired as we learn and practice. Provide for my family through support, guidance, belief in abilities, encouragement, and security making sure never to stifle a dream.

Analysis of External Environment

Huntsville, Alabama is a growing city especially with the advent of the BRAC initiative currently underway. There are many government and private sector jobs involving Acquisition and Contract Management developing daily in this geographical local. The demand for highly skilled professional increases as BRAC pulls in more and more business, in the form of contractors, from all across the U.S. The opportunity for professional growth in this area of North Alabama is outstanding at this time in my field of study.

Threats and OpportunitiesMany colleges and universities are currently providing the professional workforce with new Acquisition and Contract Managers every semester. A weak economy has forced many people back into the education environment. This is to improve either their chance of acquiring a specific job or retaining their current job by adding value to themselves in the eye of the employer. To stay above the norm and display above average capabilities, gained specifically from education and experience, is the key to overcoming the threat of competition.

The Target MarketThe target market, in my interest, will be the federal government and the many contractors that supply it as a whole. The Army Contracting Command (AMCOM) is located on Redstone Arsenal now and employs an increasing amount of Contract Managers and Contract Specialist as the completed BRAC movement grows closer to fruition. Northrop Grumman, SAIC, Boeing and Sikorsky Helicopter or some of the many contractors with local affiliation that will also be included in my target market among many others.

CompetitionProfessional competition for BRAC jobs will be high for the next several years as more and more students graduate from local and even distant colleges in the Acquisition and Contract Management field. More competition will stem from base closings abroad as each employee considers relocation to the Huntsville area. The good news in all this is that more contractors are relocating or opening offices here in the Huntsville area to be near the new government hub.

Marketing Plan

I will graduate in the spring of 2013. It is at this time or before I will start to push my attributes of being dedicated, determined, and driven to succeed. My background in manufacturing should display my understanding of many difficult contracts requiring production type manufacturing and quick response times. My extensive experience as an inspector should be valuable to any contractor as contracts many times require field trials and quality inspections. With this much background, a B.S. in Acquisition and Contract Management, and a proven employability record demonstrating years of service for every company I have worked for in the past, I should have no problem getting that perfect job.

Action Plan

Networking will be in full swing as graduation nears. I will be attending job seminars, sending out many resumes to businesses of interest along with applying for jobs on websites like USAJOBS.com, Indeed.com and many others. It is at this time that I will have looked at what Athens State University has to help in job placement, possibly even as an intern, before graduation. Should the need arise; I may broaden my scope of employers to reach outside of government and government contractors and search the renewable energy sector for employment. Many jobs will be available in my field and with many classes under my belt in Logistics and Supply Chain Management that could be an option also for the future. Someone will recognize my value to their business and I will then have the opportunity to prove myself. My vision, my value, and my determination will take me where I want to be!
