Pavements with surface defects only can be maintained by laying ultra thin surfacings.

Building on its conventional asphalt slurries, Eurovia now offers Sealvia® cold microsurfacing for

cost-effective maintenance of damaged pavements.

hiGhLY COsT EFFECTiVESealvia® is a cost effective pavement surface maintenance technique that does not directly affect the pavement structure. It is used for the same purposes as surface dressings and ultra-thin hot asphalt mixes and can replace them.

The equipment used to produce and lay Sealvia® is compact and the product is applied cold and at high laying rates. For all these reasons, Sealvia® worksites limit disruption to the surrounding community and to road users.

Given the very thin layer in which it is applied (10 mm) and its characteristics, Sealvia® is especially well suited to the maintenance of urban streets (no ancillary works) and roads with moderate traffic.

Its range of applications covers both maintenance and new construction:

> municipal, rural and urban roads,

> departmental highways,

> housing estate roads, industrial zones,

> shopping centre car parks,

> motorway emergency stopping lanes and service areas,

> tunnel pavements, etc.

AN ADVANTAGEOUs pROCEssWaterproofing, uniform surface appearance and improved surface roughness are the main benefits of Sealvia®. Thanks to the use of modified emulsion, Sealvia® offers many additional advantages:

> lower thermal sensitivity,

> greater cohesion,

> superior deformability,

> higher durability,

> better water resistance than a pure bitumen microsurfacing.

A FULLY CONTROLLED TEChNiqUESealvia® combines dense graded (0/10 mm, 0/6 mm or 0/4 mm) materials and modified bitumen emulsion. The aggregates are crushed from hard rock and comply with the requirements of the EN 13043 standard.

Proportions vary according to substrate type and condition, traffic and grading. Average dosing per layer is 15 kg/m2 for the 0/10 grading, 10 kg/m2 for the 0/6 and 7 kg/m2 for the 0/4.

When the pavement is slightly deformed (by 1 to 2 cm), a dual layer is recommended. At higher deformations, more extensive treatment – asphalt mix reprofiling or planing – is needed.

The binder is selected from among the polymer modified emulsions devised and developed by Eurovia for this purpose: Emulvia® Grip P or Emulvia® Grip S. Additives can be used to adapt emulsion breaking time to worksite conditions.

The macrotexture of the surfacing depends on the grading of the mineral aggregate used.

The macrotexture has been measured on a large number of projects. The table below shows the values obtained for a 0/6 Sealvia® after one year under T1 traffic (300 to 750 trucks/day).

Average texture depth (EN 13036-1)

ATD 0.8 to 1 mm

Braking force coefficient (P 98-220-2)

BFC at 40 km/h ≥ 0.40

BFC at 90 km/h ≥ 0.25

simpLiFiED AppLiCATiONThe laying equipment transports and stores the constituents - aggregates, emulsion and additives. It mixes and spreads them on the pavement to be maintained at the required spread rate.

Sealvia® is produced and applied by a single self-propelled mobile machine. Some machines are front loading and supply the constituents continuously, making it possible to achieve high laying rates of up to 20,000 to 25,000 m2/day. All machines have extendable spreaders that can be readily adapted to variable-width surfaces.

An Avis Technique (FTO) has been issued for Sealvia® (under previous brand names).
