Sam Walton Kelsey Anglin Sam Walton was born on March 29, 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He went to University of Missouri- Columbia and majored in economics. He worked at JC Penny until 1942 when he went into WWII. He bought a Ben Franklin variety store in 1945. He also opened a “Walton Five and Dime”. Then he started opening more Ben Franklin stores. He opened the first Wal-Mart in 1962.
