Introduction Saw is a hand tool having a toothed blade. It is used to cut hard materials like wood. They are the most primitive tools available to mankind. Production of saw has seen changes & innovations. The look and utility of saw has been diversified in the modern era. More advanced & high quality saws are being produced in large numbers.
Cheap & weak copper & bronze were used for making saw during Iron Age. The efficiency of saw mainly depended on the teeth. The number of teeth has a direct impact on the performance of the Saw. Saw kept on improving its functionality and look with more Advancements. Today a large number of saws are available to cater the industrial needs.
Evolution
Raw Materials Used The main material used is tempered, high grade steel which is alloyed with certain metals. Saws are mostly made with handles made of molded plastics. Different saws differ in the number of teeth it has depending on the kind of work which is going to be taken from it. The angle at which they are kept also differ from one saw to another. The material used to manufacture saws also keep on changing.
A specific steel alloyed with tungsten is produced and later rolled into Strips. The strips is then cooled down so that it can be transformed into Blades. Adjustment of the teeth is very important for the saw's effectiveness. Hardening is what comes next which includes hammering of the blade to make it stiff and flexible. After spraying a coating of rust protection the final blades are fastened to previously made handles.
Manufacturing Process
Quality Control The production process of the saws has to be done with highly secured measures. American National Standard is one such body which looks into these matters to diminish the chances of any hazard. There is a set standard of mixture and amount of raw materials which should be taken to produce saw. A standard steel blade for private use cannot be more than 1.25% alloywhile an industrial saw should be able to withstand a temperature up to1000 F.
