Quality Function Deployment &
Implementation in machine Sector
2
Quality Function Deployment, (QFD) is a method for translating customer's requirements into appropriate company requirements at each stage, from research and product development, to engineering and manufacturing, to marketing, sales and distribution.
It is a comprehensive method for matching customer requirements to engineering characteristic of a product.

• It is a comprehensive method for matching customer requirements to engineering characteristic of a product.• In this Presentation, Car Wiper is chosen as a case study to find out the solution of having to rise up the wiper while parking in direct sunlight.• Customers requirements are gathered through feedback from questionnaires.• The survey results are then applied into the house of quality (HOQ) and the proposed product characteristics are revealed.

The solution to this problem is by using special designed of the car wiper stand/holder that can upholds the car wiper hanging from the windscreen.
The designed of the upholds device can help the customers to overcome this problem efficiently.

1. Introduction This presentation contains discussion
about the car wiper. It includes among other the concept of wiper system, the working principle, and the materials of wiper blades.

2. Car Wiper UsesA worn wiper blade is dangerous to road users.
Car driver must have a clear, unobstructed view of the road, and the car wipers can provide this.
7
Basically, ozone, airborne contaminants, oil, sunlight and dirt all act to weaken and reduce wiper blades ability to keep the view unobstructed.
Freezing temperatures make the rubber in the wiper blades hard and brittle, which increases their tendency to crack or tear. Hot weather warps the rubber and prevents the blade from wiping the car windshield cleanly.
Rubber also deteriorates over time. As blades age, they lose their flexibility and are less able to wipe cleanly.

3. Car Wiper Inventor Mary Anderson, invented the car wipers in 1903,
and a patent was issued in 1905. By 1916, the
car wipers were a standard feature on all American Cars. Not too long after the mechanical car wiper was invented, the automatic windshield wiper was also invented.

Today, most of car drivers used electrical operated car wipers.
Normally, two blades move together to clean the windshield. One of the blades pivots from a point close to the driver's side of the car, and the other blade pivots from near the middle of the windshield.
There are a couple of other designs depending on car models.
Mercedes uses a single wiper arm that extends and retracts as it sweeps across the window

Case Study-THE CAR WIPER Continues.. 5. The Working Principles of Car Wiper Wiper combines two mechanical technologies
to perform their task. A) A combination electric motor and worm gear
reduction provides power to the wipers. B) A neat Linkage converts the rotational output
of the motor into the back-and forth motion of the wipers.
a) Motor and Gear ReductionLot of force to accelerate the wiper, a worm
gear is used on the output of a small electric motor.
The output of the gear reduction operates a linkage that moves the wipers back and forth.
11
b) LinkageA short cam is attached to the output shaft of
the gear reduction. This cam spins around as the wiper motor turns. The cam is connected to a long rod; as the cam spins, it moves the rod back and forth.

Case Study-THE CAR WIPER Continues.. 6. Wiper BladesCar blades ability to clean the glass normally
depends on the following factors. A) The slope and area of the windshieldMore wind against the wipers, which can
force the blades away from the glass at high speeds unless the wiper system is designed to resist lift.
Car wiper manufacturer should manufacture the wiper blades that have an aerodynamic, low-profile, superstructure and a heavy gauge steel frame.
13
Case Study-THE CAR WIPER Continues.. B) The material used in the blade itselfThe propose wiper blades material that should be
used to be manufactured is using a unique synthetic compound that provides superior blade flip over flexibility in extreme hot and cold weather.
C) The number of pressure points or claws holding the blade
Wiper blades feature are design and added with the contact points to increase blade contact pressure at all driving speeds. This design also provides good flexibility to maintain proper blade contact with the windshield.
14
Most wipers have a low and a high speed, as well as an intermittent setting.
If it is too fast, the windshield gets dry and the wipers squeak, if it is too slow, driver visibility is blocked by raindrops.
It can require almost constant attention to keep the wipers operating properly.

7. Wiper Control
15
The research started by identifying the problem statement, specifying the objectives and designing the scopes of work.
In order to achieve the objectives of the research, design questionnaire is required.
The questionnaire form is distributed to the targeted groups and then collected.
The targeted groups of this survey were car drivers and car owners which consists students, lecturers, factory workers and engineers.
Conclusions
16
The questionnaire and the interview did not only deal on the past implementation, but it also focus on the future developments and opportunities.
Using the survey output and results from the structured questionnaire and some interview, several technical characteristics were listed in the HOQ chart as in the 'How' and 'What' column.
Finally, discussions, recommendations and conclusions were made which include the expert view.
