CROWDSOURCING.ORG DEFINES FOUR CATEGORIES OF CROWD-

SOURCING USE CASES IN THE ENTERPRISE MARKET SEGMENT

SUMMARY OF KEY MESSAGES

Ideation-based tasks are completed by online workers engaged in the creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas, where an idea is understood as a basic element of thought that can be visual, concrete, or abstract. Ideation is all stages of a thought cycle, from innovation, to development, to actualization.

Expertise-based tasks are completed by online workers that are widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill, or accorded authority and status by their peers, or who possess knowledge based on a familiarity with someone or something that can include philosophy, facts, descriptions, information, and/or skills acquired through experience or education. It can refer to both the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

Micro-Tasks are short duration tasks completed by online workers. Micro-tasks require no specialized knowledge or expertise other than a basic level of comprehension and cognitive judgment

Software services include design, development, testing and user feedback gathering for programming code, software products and online applications. These services can be conducted by experts who possess specific skills or certifications; or users with no specialized knowledge or expertise.

Freelance services are performed by workers who are not committed to any particular employer long term and serve as independent contractors. Freelanced services usually have more flexible scope and are charged by the day, hour, a piece rate, or per-project basis.

INSIGHTS. RESEARCH. ADVISORY.

While the crowdsourcing market revenues are growing at a very respectable rate, the supply of resources is growing almost twice faster, showing early signs of supply/demand disbalance in the crowdsourcing industry. This disbalance often provides an early sign of the upcoming industry consolidation. Nonetheless, due to limited time horizon of our research, it is difficult to predict the timing and extent of this consolidation.

CROWDSOURCING INDUSTRY ACTIVELY BUILDS SUPPLY,

WHICH IS SIGNIFICANTLY OVERTAKING THE DEMAND GROWTH

MARKET GROWTH AND MATURITY

Note: It is worth noting that many crowdsourcing workers sign up for more than one CSP creating double-counting of the workforce. This behavior is qualitatively known in the industry, but is very difficult to estimate quantitatively and adjust for it. Either way we do not believe that this double-counting accounts for all of the significant difference in the growth of the revenues and worker base, thus the message above is valid.

Note: for the purposes of this analysis we defined client segments as follows: Start-up companies and small businesses - companies with less that $10M in revenues Small Enterprise - companies with $10-100 M in revenues Medium Enterprise - companies with $100M - 1B in revenues Large Enterprise - companies with revenues in excess of $1B

Detailed analysis of the revenue by crowdsourcing category also reveals that the adoption pattern varies by category. Freelance companies are most dependent on start-ups as clients, followed by Software Services category. Ideation is focused primarily on Large and Medium enterprise segments. Expertise-based crowdsourcing is the most diversified in terms of target client segments, it exhibits almost equal share of every segment.

Average crowdsourcing worker works at least once per month, about half of them work as often as once a day. Given this frequency of work, it is not surprising that majority of crowdsourcing workers hold primary job and consider crowdsourcing an additional source of income. This is most apparent in Software Services and expertise-based categories were over 80% of workers indicate that they hold another job.

In terms of industry domain knowledge CSP appear heavily focused on today's two most aggressive adopters of crowdsourcing: Internet Services and Technology. These industries are by far the most prevalent in the providers' skill portfolios; their score in the providers' responses is nearly 3 times higher than the next favorite industry (Media and Entertainment).

This heavy focus on the early adopters of crowdsourcing is understandable from the short-term point of view, but might become a handicap in the long-term. For example Financial Services and Manufacturing industries are the most important drivers of revenues in the non-government client portfolios of traditional outsourcing service providers, but score very low in today's domain knowledge of CSP.

Jelmer Riemersma, Founder [email protected] www.designrider.com

Designrider is a multidisciplinary platform where designers from all over the world gather to find new projects, show their projects and exchange experiences on design-related matters.

BUSINESS HISTORY

Designrider was founded by Veeel, an Amsterdam based co-creation agency. The founding partners Peter Veldhoven and Jelmer Riemersma, both graduates of Delft University of Technology, noticed that there were two groups that failed to find one another. Right from the start they met a huge need among companies and designers. Designers were rarely able to get a foot in the door of a large client. And companies found it difficult to locate the right designer given the huge range of creativity on offer. Since 2006 Veeel brought these groups together by working as a design agency with a large pool of designers. What started with 10 designers, rapidly grew to a 100, then a 1000 and it was time takes things a step further: Designrider was born.
