In the 16th century, the French King granted a monopoly on silk production to the city of Lyon which became the European capital of silk trade. Vieux Lyon district and the slopes of Croix-Rousse are particularly known for their narrow secret passageways (traboules) which were used by the Canuts (silk workers) as shortcuts.
