One of the main reasons that so many people are currently discussing the issue of data security is due to the NSA spying scandal, a development that has arguably harmed the credibility of almost every American technology company, leaving it in a state where getting that level of trust back could be close to impossible.

It was not a development that passed off without anyone noticing, as it managed to cause a significant amount of anger among many sections of the public, particularly among civil liberties groups, some of whom have since gone so far as to sue the NSA for its role in the surveillance programme.

The repercussions will surely continue to be felt over the course of the next 12 months, as an increasing number of companies try to reassure their customers that in this digital age, their information and most important data is safely stored away from prying eyes.

The latest lawsuit to be filed against the NSA has been made by the ACLU and Yale University's Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic and has outlined its intention to seek information on the "vast quantities" of data that the organisation has been found to be collecting.

Not only will companies themselves need to offer reassurances to the general public, but the NSA and other governmental organisations will also have to make sure that they act with a greater level of transparency in the way they conduct their operations.

One of the main complaints of the ACLU was the fact that there was little or no oversight of the programme, which in turn caused concerns over the potential reach of such action.

A separate development that may add to these concerns is the fact that a New York District Judge recently dismissed a similar lawsuit, claiming that there was no evidence that the data collected by the NSA was in any way against the US constitution, and was therefore justified.
