DAY 2 ARTICLE

‘A Historic Mistake’?

“As a nuclear power - as the only nuclear

power to have used a nuclear weapon - the

United States has a moral responsibility to

act.” - Barack Obama, the President of the

United States

On Nov. 24 in Geneva, Iran and the P5+1 - the UN Security Council’s five permanent members plus Germany - reached a

temporary agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program, ending a decade-long global nuclear standoff between major world powers, the U.S., in particular, and Iran. Under the agreement, Iran should reduce its stockpile of 20 percent-enriched uranium down to 5 percent and freeze most of its centrifuges that produce uranium, while stopping expanding its enrichment capacity. Iran will also be subject to International Atomic Energy Agency inspections of its nuclear facilities. In return, the P5+1 will impose no new sanctions on Iran for six months, while Iran will be given about $7 billion dollars’ worth of relief from sanctions. This deal signaled the “start of a rapprochement that would reduce the risk of a wider Middle East war,” international wire reports said. Indeed, the Iranian nuclear crisis was a major destabilizing factor on the world. The UNSC imposed Resolutions 1696 (2006), 1737 (2006), 1747 (2007), 1803 (2008), 1835 (2008), 1887 (2009), and 1929 (2010) on Iran, showing how much it has occupied world countries’ minds for such a long time. How to defuse tensions caused by this crisis has been a matter of everybody’s concern, as it is related to how to handle the North Korean nuclear issue. Israel’s concerns

“What was concluded in Geneva last night is not a historic agreement, it’s a historic mistake,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, downplaying the deal. “Like the agreement with North Korea in 2005, this agreement has made the world a much more dangerous place.” Back in September 2005, the North agreed to end its nuclear weapons program. “Just like the failed deal with North Korea, the current deal can actually bring Iran closer to the bomb,” said Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz. Israeli Economy Minister Naftali Bennett also called the agreement a “very bad deal.” Their remarks reflect their deep concerns over regional security.

DAY 4 DEBATE

NSA spying has done more harm than good for the United States.

Recently, the National Security Agency has come

under much public scrutiny after a very high-profile controversy became public. National Security Agency analyst, Edward Snowden, was

charged with espionage when he made public documents revealing the extent of NSA spying. This spying was occurring both domestically and

internationally. The government was quick to denounce Snowden, who fled the country and has been attempting to find asylum in places like Germany and Russia.

Known as “leaks,” the papers that were released by Snowden showed that the NSA had been

spying on citizens’ computers and phone lines through the use of malware that has

been found on at least 50,000 computer networks and wiretapping. This malware tracked individuals and stored confidential information about users. The United States federal government has remained firm on its stance that the NSA must be allowed to

continue its programs to protect the country from security threats?including, but not limited to, cyber-terrorism. Others have criticized the government for their secrecy in regards to NSA policies. This divisive issue represents a central point in the larger

debate about what governments are able to justify to protect civilians and individual liberties. However, some have asked the important question of “how far is too far?”

Pros: NSA spying has done more harm than good. The United States risks creating a

snowball that may eventually destroy what it seeks to protect? namely, civil liberties. If

in the name of protecting freedom, the government is able to strip away rights, then

what exactly is the government protecting? The recent international outrage at the

charges made against so-called traitors, Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning, prove

that many civilians are not willing to give up their privacy to protect themselves from

vague threats of cyber-terrorism. Likewise, a government is only legitimate when its

population deems it legitimate. No matter how convinced of security threats a

government may be, when a government loses the consent of its people, it is no

longer a legitimate government. The United States, if it continues along this path, risks

becoming illegitimate.

Cons: Even if my opponent is correct in addressing the reality of security threats,

there is no reason that NSA spying should be kept secret. In fact, if the security of

civilians is truly important, I would argue that letting individuals know the extent to

which the government is protecting them would be better than spying on them in

secret. As such, this debate is not a debate over the reality of security threats, but

rather, about the way in which the United States has handled them in an opaque and

unjustifiable manner that risks alienating the very citizens whose security my opponent

claims is the number one priority.

DAY 5 BUSINESS IDIOM FOCUS

Read and be familiar with the Business Idiom below and use them in your conversation.

Why study idioms?

One of the keys to speaking like a native is the ability to use and

understand casual expressions, or idioms.

1. (to) call it a night - to stop an activity for the rest of the night

Example 1: We spent a few hours walking around downtown Chicago. It was so cold that we were ready to call it a night by nine o'clock. Example 2: Let's call it a night and meet back at the office at seven

o'clock tomorrow morning to finish preparing our report. Note: There is also the expression "to call it a day" which means to stop activity for the day.

2. dime a dozen - so plentiful as to be nothing special; common

Example 1: Reality TV shows are a dime a dozen these days.

Example 2: There are so many Starbucks coffee shops in Manhattan,

they're a dime a dozen.

Note: This expression comes from the fact that a "dime" is worth only ten

cents (very little value).

3. (to) do the trick - to achieve the desired results

Example 1: Juan changed the light bulb and said, "That should do the trick!"

Example 2: My house is difficult to find, so I'll put 10 large balloons on my mailbox on the day of the party. That should do the trick.

4. (to) give someone the cold shoulder - to be cold to someone on

purpose; to snub someone Example 1: When Lisa saw Amber at the mall, she didn't even stop to talk to her. She really gave her the cold shoulder.

Example 2: I can't understand why Joe would give you the cold shoulder. I thought you two were good friends!
