Therearemanyfactorsthatcontributetolatency,andthereisoneinparticularthatyoucancontrol:thesoftwareaudiobuffersize.Theaudiobuffer(alsoreferredtoasASIObufferonaPC,orCoreAudiobufferonaMac)isanareainmemorythatTracktionusestoholdyouraudioasitworks.Thebuffersizeismeasuredinsamples,andusuallyrangesfromjustafewsamplestothousands.Thesmallerthebuffer,thefastertheaudiogetsinandoutofyourcomputer,andthelowerthelatency.

Wewouldliketosetthisbufferaslowaspossibletoachievethelowestlatency,butthereisanotherfactortoconsider:Thesmallerthebuffer,theharderyourcomputerwillhavetowork.Toillustratethis,pretendyouaregivenfiveminutestomovewaterfromalargebuckettoanotherbuckettenfeetaway.Youmustuseeitheralargepintglassorasmallwhiskeyglasstotransferthewater.Whichwouldyouchoose?Thepintglassofcourse.Ifyouchoosethewhiskeyglass,youwouldquicklygrowtiredofrunningbackandfourthmovingthesmallamountofwater.Dependingonyourfitnessandspeed,youmaynotbeabletomoveitallinfiveminutes.Thisissimilartohowyourcomputerdealswiththeaudiobuffer.Ifyouchoosetoosmallabuffer,thecomputerneedstoworkveryhardtoquicklytransfertheaudioinandoutofthebuffer.Itmaynotevenbeabletokeepup,especiallyifyouhavelotsoftracks,lotsofautomationand/orlotsofplug-insinyourwork.Ifthishappens,youraudiomaystopor“dropout.”Dropoutsatlowbuffersizesmayalsooccurifyouhaveaslowercomputerornotenoughmemory.
