The benefits of night deliveries
Night deliveries are the deliveries to shops in the inner city area during
the night hours when the city is usually quiet and inactive. Typical times
are between 10 pm and 7 am. During that time special equipment is
required such as silent trucks, pallet jacks and load carriers.
Why encourage night deliveries?
To reduce delays and travel times for the logistics service providers by
using the free road capacities at night. As a result, it:
• increases logistics efficiencies in terms of the deployment of HGV’s
and manpower
• improve shelf availability by being able to increase or optimize the
number of possible deliveries during 24 hours
• reduces emissions and energy consumption: less congestion during
night time through direct access to the shops. As an example 30% of
the morning traffic in London city is made of lorries which are
delivering to stores
• Less disturbance for the customers in the store during opening hours

What is the PIEK certification?
In 1998 the Dutch Government set out standards for noise emission during loading and unloading in retail trade
and craft businesses. This resulted in a project called PIEK and in 2004 in the PIEK certification scheme for vehicles
and equipment operating under 60dB(A) which will be suitable for use in night time deliveries without causing
noise disturbance.
These limits are set out in the ‘Retail Trade and Craft Businesses Environmental Management Decree issued by
government on October 1998. The standard resulted in a report on ‘Measurement methods for peak noise during
loading and unloading’. This report is intended to define measurement methods so that the compliance of new
equipment with the limits set by the Decree can be determined.
To achieve the standard, each product is acoustically measured and must function emitting under 60dB(A) at 7.5
metres from the sound source. It is then deemed suitable for so called “out-of-hours deliveries” that will not cause
noise disturbance to nearby residents.
The PIEK standard has been adopted in several countries like the UK, France, Germany and Belgium. All these
projects use the TNO report and the certificates granted by the national parties as the harmonized standard. On an
national level the project can differ, but they all have the same goal: a solution for the ever growing congestion and
its effects on society, that can only come with utilising that road space in off-peak times.

Customer reference: DHL Wetherspoon
”The new cages were used for night-time deliveries to Wetherspoon pubs
during the Olympic Games between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. The
lower noise levels were well received by staff and appreciated by local
residents to such an extent that we didn’t receive a single complaint during the
entire period of the Games. ”
–John Anderson, National Transport Manager, JD Wetherspoon, UK
The challenge
K. Hartwall has been working in collaboration with DHL, redefining the A-
frame roll cage. The main design aims were to reduce weight, fuel costs, CO2
emissions and noise levels making it more acceptable for residential deliveries
at night.
The solution
Thanks to the new, revolutionary design of UK A-frame Classic Silent roll
container the goals were achieved. On the latest JD Wetherspoon units noise
levels have been reduced by approximately 15 dBA, and were trialed
successfully during the London 2012 Olympics.

Customer reference: Bake Five
“Because our bakeries have to deliver to 1,350 retail shops every morning, it is
vital for our organisation to use the K. Hartwall low-noise Bread Dollies for Broban
crates.”
–Niels Vreugdenhil, CEO, Bake Five, The Netherlands
The challenge
Bake Five favours off-peak hours store delivery because it enables shorter delivery
times. The company was looking for logistics solutions that would also fulfil the
PIEK certification criteria. The PIEK certification was launched to encourage the
development of new, more quiet logistics solutions that would enable low-noise
deliveries in urban areas.
The solution
K. Hartwall has developed several solutions, which have passed the noise tests
according to the PIEK standards and can thus be used for off-hours deliveries also
in residential areas. Bake Five chose K. Hartwall’s PIEK certified Bread Dolly for
Broban crates and has been content with the improved logistics efficiency and
reduced noise levels.
