Peak Demand ReductionTo manage United Power’s growing summer peak, the cooperativebegan installing load control devices on member air conditioners in2008. The devices cycle air conditioners on and off for brief intervalsduring high demand days to reduce expensive peak power purchases.

Residential members receive a $30 bill credit each year they participate. Commercial members receive a rebate of $9 per ton on commercial

systems.

The Cycled Air program now reaches 5,100 homes. During a hotsummer day, United Power can shed over 6.5 MW of high price peakpower saving the utility hundreds of thousands of dollars—a savingswe pass on to participating members through an annual bill credit.
