Running the roads of innovation means going inside an unknown land, where rules and conventions are softer and the ground for new ideas is more prolific. Experiments, prototypes, drawings and even embryonic ideas scientists and researchers focus their attention, skills and wit on represent the raw material which then turns into design, style and quality.

In the laboratories technologies and products come to life to be exported worldwide, not only the most famous and glamorous ones, but also those which are less famous and aesthetically appealing, yet set the standard.

And it is in laboratories that Smau tracks down the stuff and ideas that are taking shape, in order to bring them into the spotlight, to show how much excellence, ability and intellect reside in research centers and universities; they are the spark for the creation of new businesses, small and innovative.

“Innovation Itineraries” is a showcase of what has ‘not yet been achieved’, of what is still at the stage of research and development, and not only in the sector that has historically been the focus of Smau – information technology and telecommunications – but also in all other sectors that are perhaps still too little known in Italy: robotics, aerospace, biotechnologies, nanotechnologies and much more.

Examples of eco-friendly and energy-saving technology and solutions will also be on display here, as they represent fundamental assets for the future.

1.1 DESCRIPTION Smau 2008, scheduled to take place at Fieramilanocity from October 15 to 18, will be a meeting place for enterprise, government and professional visitors at the fourth edition of “Innovation Itineraries. From the idea to business”. The initiative, which will take place in hall 1 of Fieramilanocity exhibition center, will include:

An exhibition area with the most innovative projects and prototypes related to the world of ICT (biotechnology, nanotechnology, robotics, aerospace, etc.);

An area reserved for one-to-one meetings between exhibitors and potential investors and/or customers for the exhibited products;

A workshop calendar, during which some of the area’s exhibitors will be presenting their projects and ideas to support business.

Concept ICT is an enabling and essential factor for any innovative process. “Innovation Itineraries. From the idea to business” will provide a pre-eminent showcase to the various forms of innovation, thus promoting business contacts and information and knowledge exchange among new ideas, investors and companies.

Exhibitors: participation requirements “Innovation Itineraries. From the idea to business” applies to start-ups, spin-offs, research centers, universities, incubators, science parks and technology districts: these are all entities which add value to the Innovation ecosystem. The following subjects are admitted to take part in this initiative:

- Start-ups with up to 18 months of existence; - Technology districts, science parks, research centers, etc.; - ICT firms wanting to present prototypes that are not on the market yet; - Companies from other sectors (automobile, energy, clothing, boating, health, etc.) wishing to exhibit

highly innovative projects. Smau, in collaboration with the Program sponsors, will host the 20 most innovative start-ups selected by the Scientific Committee to take part in this initiative as guests. Visitors “Innovation Itineraries. From the idea to business” is dedicated to Smau professional visitors interested in discovering innovative projects and new ideas for the world of business: from companies looking for projects to invest in, to firms interested in considering new prototypes and innovative technological solutions for their business. The target:

- Local and European public Institutions committed to funding innovation; - Companies; - Venture and seed capital firms and asset management companies; - Institutional bodies; - Public and private initiatives supporting innovation; - Business development firms; - Cultural Institutions; - Media.

Communication plan In order to stimulate the meetings between “Innovation Itineraries” exhibitors and their potential investors/partners/customers, Smau has conceived a dedicated communication plan including:

Ongoing media relations with the specialized and general information press (June-October). Digital Newsletters sent periodically to a mailing list of potential visitors to the area. A dedicated guide with the list of the area’s exhibitors, their main novelties and the workshop agenda,

which will be distributed at the “Innovation Itineraries” reception desk and at the Press Room on the fairgrounds.

Presence in the Official Exhibition Catalog and Map. Dedicated website http://percorsi.smau.it linked to the website www.smau.it.

1.2 EXHIBITOR PACKAGES There are two main partipation packages available to innovative subjects, both including a well-located turnkey space inside Smau 2008 and communication services. PACKAGE 1 – €3,000

- 9 sq.m turnkey stand with graphic design realized by Smau Staff based on the artwork sent by the exhibitor.

- 2 exhibitor badges. - 30 invitation tickets for visitors. - Matching area: possibility to take part in one-to-one meetings with potential investors/partners and/or

customers/users. - Presence in the area’s Guide with the company data and a brief profile. - Presence on the dedicated website http://percorsi.smau.it (in Italian only) and on the online Gallery at

www.smau.it, gathering the novelties presented by the tradeshow’s exhibitors. - Presence in the Official Catalog of the Exhibition. - Press releases dedicated to “Innovation Itineraries” mentioning the names of all the participants

included in the Press Kits made available to journalists both before and during the Exhibition. PACKAGE 2 – €5,000

- 16 sq.m turnkey stand with graphic design realized by Smau Staff based on the artwork sent by the exhibitor.

- 4 exhibitor badges. - 50 invitation tickets for visitors. - Matching area: possibility to take part in one-to-one meetings with potential investors/partners and/or

customers/users. - Presence in the area’s Guide with the company data and a brief profile. - Presence on the dedicated website http://percorsi.smau.it (in Italian only) and on the online Gallery at

www.smau.it, gathering the novelties presented by the tradeshow’s exhibitors. - Presence in the Official Catalog of the Exhibition. - Press releases dedicated to “Innovation Itineraries” mentioning the names of all the participants

included in the Press Kits made available to journalists both before and during the Exhibition.

1.3 SPONSOR PACKAGE Sponsoring “Innovation Itineraries. From the idea to business” means gaining high exposure and being closely associated with the central theme of innovation. The initiative’s Main Sponsors can be research centers, institutional subjects (banks, funds, etc.), companies from ICT and other industries. PACKAGE – €30,000

• 16 sq.m turnkey stand stand with graphic design realized by Smau Staff based on the artwork sent by the exhibitor (bigger booths must be requested and authorized by the Organizers).

• 10 exhibitor badges. • 100 invitation tickets for visitors. • 1 advertising page on the Official Catalog of the Exhibition. • Logo on the cover and inclusion of company data and profile in the area’s Guide • Innovation Itineraries’ reception desk personalized with company logo. • Presence on the dedicated website http://percorsi.smau.it (in Italian only) and on the online Gallery at

www.smau.it, gathering the novelties presented by the tradeshow’s exhibitors. • Dedicated desk in the Press Room during the Exhibition. • Inclusion of one press release in the Press Kits distributed to journalists. • Press releases dedicated to “Innovation Itineraries” mentioning the names of all the participants

included in the Press Kits made available to journalists both before and during the Exhibition. • Company logo on the digital newsletters presenting Innovation Itineraries’ novelties and previews. • Database of profiled visitors who expressed a specific interest in this area on Smau visitor registration

forms at www.smau.it.
