About WeChat

A mobile text and voice messaging communication service to make fast purchases through smartphones, developed by Tencent in China, and first released in January 2011.

The app is available on Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and Symbian platforms, and registration is completed through Facebook Connect, mobile phone SMS/VM, or Tencent QQ.

WeChat provides multimedia communication with text messaging, hold-to-talk voice messaging, broadcast (one-to-many) messaging, photo/video sharing, location sharing, and contact information exchange.

WeChat Membership Card is aimed at achieving 1 billion yuan (USD 162.9 million) for monthly transaction.

WeChat Censorship All media outlets in mainland China are required to operate a

form of self-censorship to keep themselves in line with what authorities don’t want being discussed.

“The red line”: under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party, you can't publish comments critical of the party, but you can do satire or sarcasm.

As the international users keep increasing, there is controversy over whether the conversations will be monitored or censored.

Is WeChat poised to take over the world outside China, the US included? Chinese web giant Tencent has denied claims that there is global censoring of its popular chat app WeChat.

WeChat is not just popular in China. Most of its more than 300 million users are Chinese, but 70 million live outside the country.

the Chinese tech giant behind WeChat, has appeared to enact censorship measures to placate the Chinese authorities, who have a knee-jerk aversion to any information not under their control and therefore built the notorious Great Fire Wall, a sophisticated state apparatus that filters out unwanted “noises” and blocks “vermin websites.”
