Background Information Prairies are an intricate

ecosystem with grasses, forbs, fungi and fires working together.

Material for the prairies was deposited during the last glacial advance about 10,000 years ago.

75% of the biomass is below the soil surface which helps reduce erosion and keeps the plants coming back after fires.

Today less that 1/10th of 1% of native prairies remain in the US.

Hard Labor Experience First mixed seed with sand. Spread out certain seeds in a particular

area for their study. After each section we had to remove all

the mud from our shoes with bare hands so the seeds from a certain area wouldn’t get mixed with different sections.

The Project The project that we worked for is mainly

about the small animal’s effect on the prairie growth.

Some people say that prairies are what small animals make them.
