NOTE FROM INVESTOR RELATIONS

On February 11, 2002, DuPont announced thealignment of its businesses into five market- andtechnology-focused Growth Platforms as well asthe intention to create and ultimately separate aTextiles and Interiors subsidiary (DTI). Theseactions mark the next major step towards becom-ing a sustainable growth company.

In 2001 DuPont reported its financial results by the nine reporting segments described in our 2001Annual Report. Under the former reporting struc-ture, the Strategic Business Units were the operat-ing units. Going forward, the operating units ofDuPont are the five Growth Platforms and DTI.Our 2002 financial reporting segments will coin-cide with these new operating units and willreflect how the businesses are now managed.

To help Data Book users better understand thetransformation, we present 2001 performanceinformation under both reporting structures. Thisyear’s Data Book begins with corporate financialdata and proceeds to segment overviews orga-nized by the 2001 reporting segments – both ofthese sections parallel the 2001 Annual Report.The third section gives an overview of the realign-ment, and the fourth section presents reclassifiedfinancial, product and operations data under thenew reporting segments.

By organizing the data this way, we have provideda guide to the operating transition that DuPont willundergo in 2002. We hope you find this useful.

During 2001, DuPont continued its focus on strategic actions tostrengthen its portfolio and to expand its growth technologiesand businesses, while executing against a challenging economicenvironment. We continued our transformation to a sustainablegrowth company, pursuing the three strategic initiatives thathave guided our direction since 1998: Integrated Science,Knowledge Intensity and Productivity through Six Sigma.

During 2001, DuPont also took additional steps toward activetransformation of the company:

■ DuPont Pharmaceuticals was sold to Bristol-Myers Squibb foralmost $8 billion. The cash payment provided the companywith the flexibility to further invest in its growth businesses,reduce net debt and complete the stock repurchase programannounced in 2000.

■ The Polyester business was repositioned further with a seriesof joint ventures, alliances and asset sales, reducing capitalallocation from DuPont.

■ DuPont completed several smaller acquisitions designed tostrengthen the company’s technology position in displays.

Additional highlights of the year’s activities included:

JANUARY

✓ DuPont and Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. formed a jointventure to develop, manufacture and market colloidal silica-based slurries for applications such as silicon wafer polishingand chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) of integratedcircuits. These processes are critical to the manufacture ofsemiconductors and represent markets that are growing onaverage in excess of 25 percent per year.

✓ DuPont introduced thefirst fully integrated,production-capable digitaltextile printing solution forhome furnishings andrelated industries, usingproprietary ArtistriTM

technology and the DuPont Ink Jet 3210 printer.

✓ DuPont and ShipleyMicroelectronics, a whollyowned subsidiary of Rohm

and Haas Company, agreed to jointly develop and produce fullyformulated 157 nanometer photoresists and anti-reflectivecoatings for future generations of semiconductor chips.

FEBRUARY

✓ DuPont dedicated the world’s first continuous polymerizationplant for making its new SoronaTM 3GT polymer. The continuousprocess results in a uniform polymer that answers the demand-ing standards of textile fibers manufacturers, who require auniform, consistent, high-quality polymer. 1,3 propanediol, orPDO, which is a key ingredient in SoronaTM, is currently madevia a petroleum-based process. However, DuPont is developinga biotechnology process using sugar from corn or other cropsas the raw material for PDO.

✓ DuPont entered a licensing and technology transfer agreementwith Osram Opto Semiconductors to manufacture polymer-based organic light emitting displays (poly-OLEDs), based ontechnology from UNIAX Corp., a subsidiary of DuPont. Flatpanel displays is one of the fastest growing markets withinboth business and home electronics, providing increasedbenefits for end users in wireless applications, including lightweight, increased contrast and brightness, and powerefficiency.

APRIL

✓ DuPont announced that it will discontinue the manufacture ofits fungicide benomyl and will phase out sales of Benlate® in allforms from the global market by December 31, 2001.

MAY

✓ DuPont formed a new fabric trademark,NeotisTM, and created NeotisTM Studio, a globalbusiness unit and direct source for unconven-tional engineered apparel fabric varieties.NeotisTM Studio fabrics combine the 40-yeartextile expertise of Lycra® with the distinctiveattributes of nonwoven and other engineeredsubstrate technologies to add comfort andperformance features.

JUNE

✓ Further supporting DuPont’s efforts toadvance poly-OLED technology, DuPont signed a keydevelopment agreement with Vitex, a developer of ultra-barrierfilms, for the development of innovative plastic substrates andhigh-barrier materials for use in poly-OLED displays.

✓ DuPont agreed to acquire the Yun Meng Protein Co. in China aspart of the company’s strategy to expand its high-value soyprotein business in Asia.

✓ DuPont reached a definitive agreement to sell certain of itsU.S. Polyester Enterprise businesses and manufacturing assetsto Alpek.

JULY

✓ HD-MicroSystems, a joint venture of DuPont and Hitachi,expanded production of its HD-8000 series of photodefinablepolyimides for single mask, stress buffer passivationapplications on semiconductor devices.

✓ DuPont began expansion of its Kevlar® fiber production facilityin Richmond, Virginia, including a new production line based onproprietary DuPont fiber technology. Increased capacity shouldbe available by the end of 2002.

✓ DuPont reached agreement with Toray Industries and DuPont-Toray on a technical license to manufacture and market fibersmade from SoronaTM 3GT polymer.

AUGUST

✓ DuPont launched a new consumer ingredient-brandingprogram for soy protein, introducing healthy food ingredientsmarketed under the brand name SolaeTM.

✓ DuPont formed a joint venture with LabelSystems, Inc., DuPont Authentication Systems,to provide enhanced security solutions for the product authentication and personalsecurity markets.

✓ DuPont introduced a new generation ofprotective body armor made with Kevlar®

MTPTM (multiple threat protection) technology.The concealable, soft body armor isspecifically engineered to counter threatsfrom firearms and ice-pick type weapons.

SEPTEMBER

✓ DuPont and H Power Corp, a leading fuel cell developmentcompany, signed a joint development agreement aimed atdeveloping direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) for portable andmobile applications.

✓ DuPont and MIECO Inc., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based generaltrading company Marubeni Corporation, announced the first-ever transaction of greenhouse gas emissions allowancesunder the United Kingdom’s newly developed program. Thetransaction marked an important milestone in the developmentof market mechanisms to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

OCTOBER

✓ DuPont received $7.8 billion in cash with the completion of thesale of its Pharmaceuticals business to Bristol-Myers Squibb.DuPont maintained its interest in Cozaar® / Hyzaar®, anti-hypertensive drugs discovered by DuPont and marketed byMerck & Co.

✓ DuPont and Monsanto Company announced that they hadresolved, on mutually beneficial terms, the issues related toMonsanto’s MON810 YieldGard® insect-protected corn traitused in Pioneer Hi-Bred’s corn hybrids.

✓ DuPont and Cambridge Display Technology entered into astrategic agreement to advance the commercialization of lightemitting polymer (LEP) displays, also known as polymer organiclight emissive displays. This venture is focused on furtheringthe commercialization of LEPs used to create ultra-thin,lightweight and low-power displays for electronicproducts such as mobile phones, hand-heldnotebooks and other electronic products.

✓ DuPont SafeReturnsTM, an integrated safety program to reduce employee injuries,reached a significant milestone – coverage of100,000 people – with the signing of a five-yearcontract with The Los Angeles CountyMetropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board.

DECEMBER

✓ Growers planting Pioneer® brand hybridswon 26 of 27 categories in the 2001 NationalCorn Growers Association Yield Contest –including first place in all nine categories.

Pioneer® hybrids out-yielded competitive brands nationally byan average of 7.1 bushels per acre, and one grower broke the400-bushel per acre mark for the first time in contest history.

✓ Ranked Number 1 as the most socially responsible U.S.company in the Fortune survey of “America’s MostAdmired Companies.”

✓ Received the prestigious “Kwaliteit van Werk, Kwaliteitvan Leven” (“Quality of Work Means Quality of Life”)award from the government of Belgium, recognizingDuPont as the country’s most employee-friendly company.

✓ Ranked Number 5 on the list of most desirable places fordisabled persons to work in the United States, accordingto an annual survey by Careers & the Disabled magazine.

✓ Ranked DuPont Iberica as the most ethical and sociallyresponsible company in Spain in a survey by Cinco Dias,a leading economic daily newspaper.

✓ Ranked among the top U.S. employers for womenengineers in a survey by Woman Engineer magazine.

✓ Named to Fortune magazine’s list of the 50 best U.S.companies for minorities.

Six Sigma

2001 was the second full year of implementation across thecompany. The impact of Six Sigma continued to expand as over6,000 Green Belts have now been trained. The companycontinued the initial aspect of deployment, with about 1,300trained Black Belts in place and more than 5,000 projects activeat year-end. The potential pretax benefit from active projectswas $970 million. The actual annualized pretax benefit fromcompleted projects at the end of 2001 was $910 million.

On October 1, 2001, DuPont Pharmaceuticals was sold to the Bristol-Myers SquibbCompany. DuPont retained its interest in Cozaar ® and Hyzaar ®. These antihypertensivedrugs were discovered by DuPont and developed in collaboration with Merck. This segment contains several growth initiatives as well as the DuPont Global Services Business andholdings from several of the company’s divested and nonaligned businesses. In aggregate, sales fromthese businesses represent about 1 percent of total company sales.

On October 1, 2001, DuPont Pharmaceuticals was sold to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. DuPontretained its interest in Cozaar® and Hyzaar®. These antihypertensive drugs were discovered by DuPont and developed in collaboration with Merck. Effective with fourth quarter 2001 results, thePharmaceuticals segment reflected only DuPont’s share of the financial results of this ongoing collaboration.

The company has exclusively licensed marketing rights for Cozaar® and Hyzaar® to Merck. Cozaar®

and Hyzaar® are the leading angiotensin II receptor blockers (AIIA) worldwide in the treatment ofhypertension. Cozaar® is the first and only antihypertensive to demonstrate, in an important outcomesstudy, a significant reduction in End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) in Type 2 diabetes, which is among thefastest growing public health concerns. The U.S. patents covering Cozaar® and Hyzaar® compounds,pharmaceutical formulation and use for treatment of hypertension expire in 2010.

By building on DuPont expertise in materials development, microbial biology, genetics and plant biology,Bio-Based Materials develops and produces novel materials with superior functionality that offersignificant growth potential. SoronaTM, a 3GT polymer made from corn glucose, is the first commerciallyavailable product in this business.

Intellectual Assets Business is the portal into DuPont technology and know-how, giving access to itslarge patent estate through license and donation arrangements. This inventory of DuPont technologies isnow available for licensing to other companies through the DuPont Technology Bank.

The Corporate Ventures program leverages a variety of knowledge platforms and routes-to-market for cost-effective exploration to create new solutions with significant market potential. By scanning themarketplace, analyzing technologies on the horizon, and finding the intersections of DuPont competen-cies with market needs and trends, Corporate Ventures helps create future business opportunities.
