Increasingly, the 9 to 5 work day is disappearing. Companies, for a variety of reasons, are attempting to squeeze that last bit of profitability from workers through part-time employment hoping to shore up their bottom line. The need for controlling costs is increasingly driving work place decisions. This shouldn’t be news to anyone. It’s the new economy. And, it’s the new normal. Get used to it. Getting Caught In The Trap Who’s caught up in this New Economy fallout? Well, pretty much everyone, employed and unemployed alike. For the first time in anyone’s memory, if ever, there are four generations working under one roof. Managers and HR folks are stretched thin attempting to understand and work within this New Economy paradigm. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, the breakdown of the American labor force is as follows: : Pre-Boomers roughly 5% Millennials at about 25% Gen X is at just over 32% Baby Boomers at 39% So, we end up with about half of the American workers aged between 20 and 40, and the other half at 40+, with all of the makings of real problems brewing for those that are caught in the corporate squeeze currently taking place. Leaving millions feeling as though their careers have stalled or worse, feeling disenchanted with the daily grind. Age Discrimination If that weren’t enough, AARP reports that in 1997, 15,785 age discriminated claims were filed. As of 2013, there were 21,396 filed. You do the math! And earlier this year, Forbes.com ran a piece on age discrimination that put it on the line in no nonsense terms when author Liz Ryan wrote, “Age discrimination is everywhere.” It is. And it isn’t going away anytime soon. But traversing the generational landscape is difficult if one is “living it and working it” daily. It does put the ball in the court of business; and they use it to maximum advantage.
