CONTINUOUS PASSIVE MOTION MACHINE Ref-No: TA-PVA11255 BACKGROUND In the postoperative rehabilitation to recover the functionality of the hip or knee joint, the use of a continuous passive motion splint has been established in combination with manual physiotherapy measures. After an operation the early movement of the affected joints can be ensured by the use of a CPM machine. This leads to a reduction in the degradation processes of affected muscles (atrophy), as well as to a reduced hardening of the joint after an operation. At the same time the healing process of the active and passive joint structures should be improved by the early movement to increase the carrying capacity of the limb. PROBLEM The established CPM machines are usually devices which have been designed for the flexion of the knee joint. This has the disadvantage that the use of hip joint rehabilitation in the field allows no optimal movement of the hip joint. The exercising of hip abduction and adduction is not possible. Another problem is the lack of combined passive and active movement therapy. These disadvantages are eliminated by the invention presented here. SOLUTION The innovation of the invention regards the improved exercising of the hip joint and the possibility of the combination of active and passive movement therapy. By integrating an additional axis of motion, hip abduction and adduction well as hip flexion and extension are possible. This is possible as a separate motion as well as a mixing motion. Furthermore the CPM machine allows passive as well as active treatment of the joints, and the combination of both is also possible. In addition monitoring the therapy is possible because of the integrated sensor system. This allows patient-specific treatment. The training intensity can be progressively adapted to the load limit and daily condition of the patient. ADVANTAGES Passive and active movement therapy. CONTINUOUS PASSIVE MOTION MACHINE

Ref-No: TA-PVA11255

BACKGROUND

In the postoperative rehabilitation to recover the functionality of the hip or kneejoint, the use of a continuous passive motion splint has been established incombination with manual physiotherapy measures. After an operation the earlymovement of the affected joints can be ensured by the use of a CPM machine. This leads to a reduction in the degradation processes of affected muscles(atrophy), as well as to a reduced hardening of the joint after an operation. At thesame time the healing process of the active and passive joint structures shouldbe improved by the early movement to increase the carrying capacity of the limb.

PROBLEM

The established CPM machines are usually devices which have been designed forthe flexion of the knee joint. This has the disadvantage that the use of hip jointrehabilitation in the field allows no optimal movement of the hip joint. Theexercising of hip abduction and adduction is not possible. Another problem isthe lack of combined passive and active movement therapy. Thesedisadvantages are eliminated by the invention presented here.

SOLUTION

The innovation of the invention regards the improved exercising of the hip jointand the possibility of the combination of active and passive movement therapy.By integrating an additional axis of motion, hip abduction and adduction well aship flexion and extension are possible. This is possible as a separate motion aswell as a mixing motion. Furthermore the CPM machine allows passive as well asactive treatment of the joints, and the combination of both is also possible. Inaddition monitoring the therapy is possible because of the integrated sensorsystem. This allows patient-specific treatment. The training intensity can beprogressively adapted to the load limit and daily condition of the patient.

ADVANTAGES

Passive and active movement therapy.
