Executive summary

For our project we got the opportunity to conduct an interview with the City Bank. From the interview we got

an idea about how things actually work in the corporate world and how the Information System plays an

important role in any bank. Citibank is a consumer division of financial services multinational Citigroup.

This report basically points out these requirements - Role of information system, Apply System Approach to

Understand Information Systems, Information Systems and Web Technology, Technical Understanding,

Information Systems Security. In this report we’ll get to know all about these requirements

1.0 Introduction

The City Bank is one of the oldest private Commercial Banks operating in Bangladesh. It is a top bank

among the oldest five Commercial Banks in the country. It started their operations in 1983. The Bank

started its journey on 27th March 1983 through opening its first branch at B. B. Avenue Branch in the

capital, Dhaka city. The City Bank is among the very few local banks which do not follow the traditional,

decentralized, geographically managed, branch based business or profit model. Instead the bank manages

its business and operation vertically from the head office through 4 distinct business divisions namely

1. Corporate & Investment Banking

2. Retail Banking (including Cards)

3. SME Banking &

4. Treasury & Market Risks.

Under a real-time online banking platform, these 4 business divisions are supported at the back by a

robust service delivery or operations setup and also a smart IT Backbone. The bank currently has 87

online branches spread across the length & breadth of the country.

The City Bank Limited adopted Information System in 2002 named 'FINACLE' provided by

Infosys Technologies Limited, the global IT consulting, software products and services powerhouse4

.

Infosys provides The City Bank with a wide range of services that support and complement

FINACLE Information System. Drawing on its expertise in the banking domain, strong quality

orientation, technology expertise and ability to successfully transform large and complex banks,

FINACLE helps The City bank move from planning to seamless implementation

I. Application development and maintenance

FINANCE Application Development and Maintenance services are designed to offer banks the

cost-efficiencies of reliably outsourcing the maintenance and enhancement of FINACLE solutions.

Performance tuning from FINACLE is designed to enable the customer to derive enhanced system

performance from the FINACLE suite of solutions.

FINACLE empower banks to make appropriate, well-informed and data driven decisions when

setting up their excellence centre for performance. And also enable banks to make critical decisions

regarding investments, go-live readiness, new product introduction, mergers, acquisitions and

use FINCALE. This helps to Speed up their decision making process and flow of information.

2.3 Benefits of having FINACLE as Information System

• Cost-effective Business Engine: Finacle (IS) enables The City Bank to gain access to a new

customer by setting up a low-cost channel to. The solution presents banks with the advantages of

reduced integration by leveraging common interface messages, maintenance and deployment

costs. This translates into significant cost savings without banks having to compromise on features

or the range of devices supported.

• Ease of Operation: Banks can deploy the solution to on-board customers offline, even in the

absence of Internet connectivity. Offline banking is enabled through ubiquitous and easy to use

devices such as laptops. The innovative spot-registration process supports both smart-card and

simple ID card-based banking, reducing customer on-boarding time and lowering entry barriers.

The solution can be easily deployed by the bank’s staff or business correspondents.

• Robust Security: Fingerprint-based biometric authentication ensures the fidelity of every

transaction performed using Finacle solution. In addition, it offers extensive application security

features like URL encryption, referral URL check and session management to provide a robust

security framework.

3.0 Apply System Approach To Understand System

FINACLE is used to get processed information. FINACLE gives accurate and reliable output to the

city bank.

3.1 Input:

Employees of The City Bank gives input in the FINACLE through a server. The server can be

accessed only by the authorized employee of the bank.

They put information like, Depositors’ or creditors’ financial updates, Transactions, account

holders’ information, employee information. For example:

3.2 Processing:

After uploading all the information, FINACLE process all the information and arrange them in

documents, files, databases.

3.3 Output:

When the processing section finishes, FINACLE provides arranged information of the computer

screen. Users also can print out that particular information. FINACLE provides graphical outputs

with diagrams. Customers can access these outputs through internet. For example:

4.0 Information System and Web Technologies

4.1 Web technology is being used in City Bank:

The information system of City Bank actually runs on web technology. City Bank uses internet as a form of its

web technology. City Bank uses internet to access its severed and complete their all types of works. A figure is

shown below:

4.2 How this technology is helping: Using the web technology, the information system of the bank is having

so many benefits to achieve its objectives. Here are some points that will explain its effectiveness to achieve

the bank’s goals –

Automation of banking process, including straight through processing.

Effective control and monitoring through internet.

Faster consolidation of data at branch and banking levels.

Enhanced customer experience.

Reduction of fraud.

Reliable performance.

Flexibility for incorporating new banking regulations such as BASIL, IFRS norms etc.

5.0 Requirement 4: Technical Understanding

5.1 Types of Database and Database Management System Package Used in Are :

The City Bank uses ORACLE database system. Finacle is one of the largest Independent Software Vendors

partners for Oracle and has deep engagements with Oracle (Software and Hardware) in providing an

integrated, highly scalable, secure, and reliable banking platform. Finacle is also a Platinum partner of

Oracle and collaborates with Oracle on technology to bring the benefits of certified and optimized solution

and also by offering single-window first line support to banks for better TCO. Finacle on Oracle (Software

and Hardware) runs some of the largest retail banking sites, bringing operational efficiencies and agility to

banks. The benchmark results of joint solutions from Finacle and Oracle have consistently proven to exceed

high demands on scalability, performance and availability

Computer system can have different types of threats. Most common threats today are misuse of information,

cyber crime, data fraud, internal employee conflict, poor management, viruses, phishing attacks, Trojan etc.

6.1 Five information system threats for City bank

Cyber Crime: Cyber crime encompasses any criminal act dealing with computers and networks ,

traditional crimes conducted through the Internet is also called hacking.

Misuse of information: Employees input wrong information into their database, either by mistake or on

purpose to get back at their employers or sometimes they store data in the wrong file or they leak

information to the other banks.

Phishing attacks: Phishing is an e-mail fraud method in which criminals attempt to gather personal

and financial information from recipients.

Internal employee conflict: Strained relationships or personality clashes, Communication problems

differing, views goals, interests, competition for limited resources are the example of internal conflict.

Trojan: Trojan is a virus that can affect any kind of banking file and also can disable software.

6.2 Two most dangerous threats:

6.3 Security management tool to prevent these threats:

To prevent misuse of information, they use “Secured login-(16 digit) Card Number and Personal

Identification Number (PIN)”.

FINACLE provides security to database system through Oracle database security vault.

They use “Norton Antivirus and Anti-Spyware” to prevent Trojan.

7.0 Conclusion

City Bank’s information system is not that strong but they are trying their best to improve. FINACLE

provided by Infosys Technologies Limited are fulfilling their objectives, helping city bank to achieve their

long term strategic goals and also helping them to reach their customer’s expectation.
