Our class has started the project on the life cycle of a chicken.

We are going to hatch our very own chicks.

INTRODUCTION

Page 3: Chick presentation 3

HOW IT BEGINS!

The hen lays one egg every day.

Page 4: Chick presentation 3

The egg will turn into a chick after 21 days if…

THE EGG

Page 5: Chick presentation 3

KEEPING WARM

The eggs are kept warm.Usually the hen sits on the eggs to keep them warm.

Page 6: Chick presentation 3

INCUBATOR

However we cannot use a hen so we will use an incubator.

Page 7: Chick presentation 3

WHAT THIS MEANS

An incubator keeps things at the correct temperature. Can you think of anywhere an incubator could be used? Think of little babies.

Our incubator will keep the eggs at the correct temperature for the chicks to grow.

Page 8: Chick presentation 3

THE INCUBATOR

We have to turn the incubator three times a day to make sure the temperature is even.

Page 9: Chick presentation 3

If everything goes correctly the chick will hatch from the egg after 21 days.

AFTER 21 DAYS…

Page 10: Chick presentation 3

THE SHELL

The eggs hard shell protects the baby as it grows.

When the chick is ready to hatch it will peck at the shell with it’s beak until the egg cracks.

Page 11: Chick presentation 3

HATCHING TIME

Slowly the chick will come out from the egg. This can sometimes take up to a day!

The chick is wet when it hatches from its egg.

Page 12: Chick presentation 3

The chicks feathers will dry quickly and soon will become nice and fluffy!

STAYING WARM

The chicks must then be kept very warm for the next few weeks.

We will use an infra-red light to keep them warm.

Page 14: Chick presentation 3

We will then feed them well and look for a good home to go to.
