Can we upgrade a Revit model that includes linked Point cloud files? Well, very briefly its answer is a big yes. Now, let me state this clearly that this blog holds a lot of importance to BIM modelers as I am going to describe the process of upgrading a Revit model that contains linked point cloud files within it in .pcg file format. Before Revit 2014 came into picture, it was a common practice among BIM modelers to use .pcg files into Revit for developing 3D as-built models that are used in renovation, retrofit and refurbishment projects. But as quickly as Revit 2014 became available to BIM modelers, they started to use .rcp and .rcs file formats due to the newly included point cloud engine in it which can suitably read these file formats. So for indexing .pcg files which are contained in a Revit model into .rcp and .rcs file formats users are required to follow the following procedure. Process of indexing .pcg files into .rcp and .rcs files For converting .pcg files into .rcp files users are first required to open a 3D Revit model that incorporates .pcg point cloud files within it in Autodesk Revit 2014. Once the 3D model containing .pcg file within it is opened in Revit, The Unresolved References dialog reflects in front of modelers. Then for fixing the problem, that is for indexing the .pcg file modelers are required to click ‘Open Manage Links to correct the problem.’ Once modelers click "Open Manage Links to correct the problem" this helps in opening The Manage Links dialog. In the Manage Links dialog within Point Cloud tab BIM modelers are suggested to pay attention to ‘Update’ which displays for the linked .pcg files within Status Column. After this modelers are suggested to select a .pcg file before clicking ‘Reload Form’ for converting the file into .rcp file. Now within the Point Cloud Dialog, modelers are suggested to fill appropriate inputs in the options available. For example the various options within the Point Cloud Dialog which require input to be added are ‘For Look in’ ‘For Files of type’ and ‘For File name.’ For example in the ‘For Look in’ modelers are suggested to fill .pcg file. Once appropriate inputs are included for these entire options click ‘Open.’ As soon as Open is clicked by users it displays a dialog saying ‘File Not Fixed’ indicating towards the .pcg file that is selected in the process earlier. Now modelers are required to select ‘Yes’ so that Revit can create an indexed .rcp file. Now within ‘Point Cloud File Indexing dialog’ users should specify the folder along with the file name for output project file. Apart from this temporary directory that is utilized for indexing should also be determined.

Process of indexing .pcg files into .rcp and .rcs files

For converting .pcg files into .rcp files users are first required to open a 3D Revit modelthat incorporates .pcg point cloud files within it in Autodesk Revit 2014.

Once the 3D model containing .pcg file within it is opened in Revit, The Unresolved References dialog reflects in front of modelers.

Then for fixing the problem, that is for indexing the .pcg file modelers are required to click ‘Open Manage Links to correct the problem.’

Once modelers click "Open Manage Links to correct the problem" this helps in opening The Manage Links dialog.

Once appropriate inputs are included for these entire options click ‘Open.’

As soon as Open is clicked by users it displays a dialog saying ‘File Not Fixed’ indicating towards the .pcg file that is selected in the process earlier.

Now modelers are required to select ‘Yes’ so that Revit can create an indexed .rcp file.

Now within ‘Point Cloud File Indexing dialog’ users should specify the folder along with the file name for output project file. Apart from this temporary directory that is utilized for indexing should also be determined.

Now users should click ‘Start Indexing’ and they should eventually click ‘Close’ when the indexing process is over.

When the .pcg point cloud file is indexed into .rcp file users can reload the file in the model.
