AREMIVisualising Australia’s Energy Resources and Infrastructure
Ana Belgun| Project Officer
March 2016
DATA61
• New venture between CSIRO’s Digital Productivity Flagship and NICTA (National ICT Australia)
• Announced by Minister for Industry and Science and Minister for Communications on 28 August 2015
• 300+ PhD students in computational sciences
• Approx. 500 scientists
• Approx. 100 software engineers
• 22 University partners
National Map & AREMI
• National Map – previously managed by the Department of Communications; currently by the Prime Minister & Cabinet
• Over 3,000 datasets integrated
• Previewer of most of the spatial data from data.gov.au
• AREMI leverages National Map architecture; focused on the energy sector
• AREMI received funding from ARENA as part of ARENA’s Emerging Renewables Program
• Project started in September 2014
• Collaboration between ARENA – funding partner; Data61 –developer; Geoscience Australia – website hosting; Clean Energy Council – industry liaison partner
AREMI Objectives
• Inform investment decisions in energy infrastructure, therefore increasing energy sector productivity
• Increase public and private investments in renewable energy by reducing time and costs during pre-competitive planning stages
• Create the opportunity for public and private sectors to develop and share value adding analytics services
AREMI Consultations
• Over 160 users consulted through workshops, interviews and usability testings
• Top priorities identified:
1. electricity infrastructure and power generation & consumption; network capacity & constraints
2. cadastre & land tenure;
3. planning
4. renewable resources
5. other infrastructure (roads, rail, oil, gas etc.);
6. environmental; elevation/terrain; boundaries and population
