Advancement Of Dri l led Shaft Advancement Of Dri l led Shaft ConstructionConstruction
Drilled shaft construction has advanced to new heights due to further developments in drilling equipment and construction techniques. Nowadays, drilled shafts are useful in services like dewatering well systems, erosion control, and low overhead drilling. They can be used in services like underpinning, micropiles, tunnel vent shafts, and elevator jackshafts.
A drilled shaft involves fluid placement in a drilled hole. Also known as a drilled pier, it is a deep foundation with a structure that can be supported by various foundations that are chosen based on factors like the cost, site subsurface materials, the loads that must be imposed, and other special considerations like high lateral capacity. Drilled shafts are also known as 'caissons' or ‘bored piles’ and they are known to be highly efficient and cost effective deep foundation systems. Hence, drilled shafts are used all over the world to create large structures and bridges where lateral resistance and large loads are important factors.
Advantages There are many advantages to dri l led shaft construction. Apart from economics and
versatility in dewatering projects, the construction of drilled shafts can minimize pile cap requirements and provide high lateral and axial loading capacity. Drilled shafts can easily adapt to different site conditions without causing further disturbance to the surrounding environment. It reduces vibrations and produces slightly less noise, too.
Different Designs and Construction Methods Drilled shafts can be designed in different ways. The 'end bearing' design lets the load
get carried by the end or the base of the shaft. The 'friction shaft' is another design that lets the load dissipated throughout the materials used to form it. There are also different construction methods for drilled shafts. Dry shaft construction is ideal for sites where soil and rock conditions and ground water level can permit the shaft construction with a dry excavation, and where an engineer can visually inspect the bottom and sides of the shaft before concrete is placed.
Wet shaft construction is best when water or slurry is used to maintain a stable hole for the entire shaft, and cased shaft construction is used when certain construction methods are insufficient to prevent the hole from caving or getting deformed.
Drilled shaft construction can be a great option as
long as it is not used in contaminated areas and sensitive construction requirements. Hiring a reputable drilling and construction company with qualified inspectors and vast construction expertise is crucial in ensuring that the drilled shafts can be constructed properly.
