Background ResearchIn any research paper the first thing we need to do is

“Background Research.” Background research means the

collection of previously published and unpublished information

about a site, region, or particular topic. It is the first step of all

good investigations.

This will help us to become more familiar with our topic and

introduce us to any other research which will be beneficial to us.

For example, if we want to make a project about the increasing

use of mobile phone, then the data related to mobile companies,

their services, subscribers, growth rate and their profit will serve

as background research for us.

Primary Research

Secondary Research

Types of Background research

There are two types of background research. They are -

Primary research involves the study of a subject through firsthand observation and investigation. Primary research may come from our own observations or experience, or from the information that we gather personally from other people.

The most convenient way to get information is secondary research. Secondary research involves the collection of information from studies that other researchers have made of a subject. We get secondary research from different books, journals, articles, reports or by using internet.

Importance of Background ResearchAfter choosing a topic, we need to locate introductory sources that give basic background information about the subject.

The Importance of Background Research are explained below:

Background research is necessary so that we can know how to design our research project. It gives the information that is essential to understand a situation or problem. It provides broad overview of the subject .It Introduces us to the key issues of our research subject. Background research helps us to focus on names, dates, events, organizations, terms, etc., associated with a topic. It can also help us to formulate or reformulate our topic .

When we begin our background research, we must keep accurate records of collected data. A useful way to organize our background research is to have two files – one for primary research and one for secondary research. Notes from primary and secondary sources should be carefully filed and labelled.

Keeping records

• For the primary research file, notes from each contact can be separated by a contact sheet which gives the name, the date and time of meeting and a contact number or address.

Primary Research

• When noting details for books, reports or articles which may appear in the final report, we should include all the details which would be needed for the bibliography.

Secondary Research

SOURCES OF BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Primary Sources

• Relevant people• Researcher observation • Researcher experience• Company/organization

records• Statistical data

Secondary Sources

• Research books• Research reports• Journal articles• Websites/Internet

Precautions

For primary research we must take into account the related people or subjects.

Any information obtained from secondary sources must be carefully assessed for its relevance and accuracy.

We should ensure the validity and reliability of the data.

Our secondary data should be up-to-date.

Precautions When using internet we must try to use websites run by organizations that we know and trust.

We can check the “About Us” section on the web page for more information about the creator and organization.

Finally, we can say, A background research serves as an introduction to a specific topic. It gives the writer an overview of the topic. For a better and accurate research paper the study of background research is obvious. So, to prepare a standard and successful research paper we must deal with the background research properly.
