Luna® fungicides – the latest innovation from Bayer CropScience – contain a new class of chemistry that will provide unique systemic solutions for protection against brown rot blossom blight, shothole, scab, anthracnose, Alternaria leaf spot and the other key diseases of almonds. Both Luna Sensation and Luna Experience are EPA-registered and approved for use in tree nuts.

UNIQUE SDHI FUNGICIDE

The new active ingredient in Luna fungicides – fluopyram – is not a carboxamide. Fluopyram shares the same SDHI mode of action with boscalid, fluxapyroxad, and penthiopyrad, but fluopyram behaves very differently. It is uniquely in the pyramide chemical group and differs in shape and in molecular flexibility from other SDHI fungicides. Luna/fluopyram continues to control boscalid-resistant isolates.

Bayer CropScience recommends Luna Experience not be rotated with other Group 3 (DMI) or Group 7 (SDHI) products. Bayer CropScience recommends Luna Sensation not be rotated with other Group 11 (QoI) or Group 7 (SDHI) products.

CURRENT RESEARCH

Luna® Sensation penetrates green tissue and moves systemically into closed buds even when sprayed 15 days before blossoms open. The data above shows newly open blossoms are already protected from brown rot blossom blight.

MRL TIMELINE Luna Sensation and Luna Experience are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and are approved for sale. Bayer CropScience is establishing Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) in export countries. All established MRLs are posted on the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service Web site. This information will be kept current as the final MRLs are received. For MRL updates, go to www.mrldatabase.com.

In a 2009 trial in Tulare Co., conducted by Dr. Steve Deitz, Sawtooth Ag Research, Tulare, CA, Alternaria alternata caused nearly complete defoliation of the untreated trees, while Luna Sensation provided the best control of the trial.
