APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY

OUR ENVIRONMENT Focused on reducing our electricity, fuel, water and wastewater to

continuously lessen our impact on the environment. Strengthened our guidelines and procedures at our manufacturing plants to identify and respond effectively to emergency situations and accidents.

OUR PRODUCTS Implementation of Green Chemistry Principles that our Technical

Community uses for our product development, fully compliant with new hazardous labelling regulations, continue to reduce / eliminate harmful raw material from our formulations and sustainable Palm Oil Production.

OUR PEOPLE Continuously improve Safety performance, conducting safety

training, and implementing new safety programs, reducing Quaker Safety Index by 10 %.

Established green teams at most locations globally – associates responsible to develop and execute action plans to make their sites more sustainable workplace.

Specific Initiatives for Tata Steel

Environmentally friendly

Boron (Reprotoxic) free

No Inorga

nics

Better Blow off properties (less surfacta

nt)

Presently under trial at CRM,

Tata Steel

– Re-using waste (separating Higam sludge)

Value Generation - Benefit

Taking a moderate value ( Rs. 50 per kg ) Tata can earn 50,000x 50 ( considering 50 tons of Fe2O3 and cost Rs50 per kg )= Rs. 25 lakhs per annum ( chemical equation )2 Fe generates 1 Fe2O3 2x 56 g=112 g of Fe produces 112 + 48= 160 g Fe2O3 20 % Fe of 180 tons of sludge means 36 ton of Fe 36 ton of Fe would produce 160/112 x36 ton= 51 .42 Tons of Fe2O3

Page 12: 07. quaker tsl sustainability expo

Value Generation - Benefit• The energy which Tata would gain by incineration

of the reclaimed rolling oil from the sludge.

• Our analytical results show that 50 % of the sludge is hydrolyzed rolling oil.

• The calorific value upon incineration is almost 10,000 Kcal/KG. ( From standard literature) Therefore 50 % of the total sludge being rolling oil , it would be around 90 Tons of Rolling oil from 180 Tons of Higam sludge.

• 90 MT= 90000KG . On incineration it would generate

90000 x 10000 Kcal . =900000000 Kcal .

Conclusion

» A) No cost of acid as the acid would be reclaimed in the ARP

» B) approx. INR 25 lakhs from pigment grade Fe2O3

» C) Huge Heat energy from incineration of apprx. 90 tons of biofuel. ( 9x10 to the power 8 Kcal)

» D)Tata do not have to pay approx. 6 to 7 lakhs to the 3rd party contractor per annum.

» E) Tata’s own control over the entire safe sludge disposal process.
