Recirculation-ball steering is used on many trucks and SUVs today

The pinion gear is attached to the steering shaft. When you turn the steering wheel, the gear spins, moving the rack. the most common type of steering on cars, small trucks and SUVs

There are a couple of key components in power steering in addition to the rack-and-pinion or recirculation-ball mechanism

The device that senses the force on the steering wheel is called the rotary valve

The key to the rotary valve is a torsion bar

The top of the bar is connected to the steering wheel, and the bottom of the bar is connected to the pinion orworm gear

The input from the steering shaft forms the inner part of a spool-valve assembly

Three Specific Ratings Applied

TractionIt is based on tests to determine the tire's coefficient of friction on wet asphalt and wet concrete

Temperature It is based on the tire's ability to dissipate heat while running at high speed against a rotating cylinder

Tread wearLeast reliable of the UTQG grades. Grade is tested by running a control tire around a circular track
