IS0/TS 16949 AN AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR QUALITY STANDARD
INTRODUCTION
• ISO/TS 16949:2009, in conjunction with 9001:2008 defines the quality management system requirements for the design and development, production and when relevant, installation and service of automotive related products.
• Today 30 percent of more than 100 existing automobile manufacturers affiliate the requirements of the norm but especially the large Asian manufacturers.
• ISO/TS 16949 was prepared by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), with support from ISO/TC 176, Quality management and quality assurance.
• ISO/TS 16949:2009 can be applied throughout the automotive supply chain.
• ISO/TS 16949:2009 uses ISO 9001:2008 as its base.• The process-oriented approach to business processes
that is addressed in the ISO 9001:2008 is the base of the standard

ISO/TS 16949:2009 – Particular Requirements
APPLICABILITY• The TS 16949 definition of supplier applicability must
apply to the organization seeking registration( see 3.1.6 in TS 16949) and rules for achieving and maintaining IATF Recognition section 1.0
• Any tier may be registered if it has a direct customer in the automotive supply chain (most affected are Tier1 and Tier2 suppliers)
• Distributors cannot be registered to TS 16949• Evidence of being a potential supplier to a customer
requiring TS 16949 could include a request for Quotation issued to the organization or the organization being on a current bid list of TS16949 subscribing customer.
TRAINING
• Supplier training courses relative to ISO/TS 16949:2009 application and certification are available from third party registrars. The most effective sources for public training have often shown to be the registrar that knows and has observed the TS criteria applied in a particular manner.
