How it works

• An electric car is run by an electric motor, which is powered by a controller which gets its power from an array of rechargeable batteries.

• Electric cars are easily confused with hybrid electric

cars, which are a combination of an internal combustion engine, and a battery, As an electric car is simply run on electricity stored in batteries.

Refueling• Because E.V.s are fueled by electricity, they can be

recharged by a charger installed at your home, your work place or many other places such as Costco or your local shopping mall. Charging time varies depending on the type of battery, how “empty” your battery is, and how much energy the battery can hold, generally it takes about 2 to 5 hours to recharge vehicles 1/4 to 3/4 full and 6 to 8 hours to recharge vehicles that are on empty, unless you have a lithium battery which would only take ten minutes for a full recharge.

First electric cars

• The first electric car was built in 1888, it was created by two English inventors, J.K. Harley and Fred M. Kimball. The Woods Motor Vehicle Company became the first American manufacturer of the electric car in 1896. By 1912 there were 20,000 electric cars and 10,000 electric trucks and buses in the United States.

• The Zap-X crossover; 644 horse power, top speed of 155mph, has a 0-60 acceleration of 4.8sec. and can travel 350 miles on a single charge.

The Rinspeed sQuba

• The Rinspeed sQuba is an electric car that drives on land, on water’s surface and under water, its top speed reaches 77mph on land, 3mph on the surface, and 1.8mph under water, it has three electric motors and can reach 30 ft below the surface. Bringing this car into existence cost 1.5 million dollars. It also has sophisticated laser technology which allows it to drive on land with out a driver, it can see the road and will avoid pedestrians, and collisions.

reduce gasoline consumption by an estimated 750 gallons annually.• E.V.s reduce pollutants by more than 90% when compared to the

cleanest conventional gasoline-powered vehicles (even when factoring in the emissions from power plants generating the electricity to charge the vehicle.)
