The linking of real objects, such as machines or vehicles, with visual and virtual information (3D objects, graph-ics, text and image information, loca-tion-based information, among others), provides the user with useful informa-tion and details for his work - in real time and available on mobile devices.
Data of all types can be combined with interactive elements and animation and displayed where it is needed: in the user’s work environment. To provide a realistic representation, the picture-in-picture fade-ins are positioned to scale in the actual environment and are displayed on smartphones, tablets or data glasses.
As soon as the user points the camera of his smartphone or tablet to a real object, an image or a marker, the picture-in-picture fade-ins appear on the screen. Just like in any other mobile app, the user can conveniently control objects and open the desired content by touching the screen, ges-tures or by speech.
Augmented Reality makes it possi-ble to experience digital information interactively, control it intuitively and it can be learned easily.
What is AR?
What does Augmented Reality do? How does AR work?
Augmented Reality expands the real environment through
accurately positioned picture-in-picture fade-ins of digital
information on common mobile devices and data glasses.

What are the advantages of AR?
The benefi ts of Augmented Reality in a nutshell:
Augmented Reality visualises information where it is needed.
This saves time and allows for cost-optimised planning,
production and maintenance.
The visualisation of complex services and repair scenarios reduces downtime and assembly time and improves quality.
Virtual tools and components can be displayed as digital user instructions in the real work environment of the employee
Users can carry out difficult work steps more quickly and at a lower error rate
X-ray vision with Augmented Reality makes hidden components and assemblies visible and prevents unnecessary assembly and disassembly
Virtual planning and target/actual comparison allow for quick decisions and planning-safety
The need for training is significantly reduced thanks to the vast knowledge retention

The CAP process exemplifi ed by technical documentation
Authors use digital representations with Augmented Reality to explain complex issues. At the required point in the doc-umentation, the author loads the digital content, such as 3D data or video, directly into the editing system. Using a simplifi ed process in CAP, the author then creates the fi nished Augmented Reality scene for mobile devices and data glasses.
Documentations can be amended in just a few steps when using CAP. Users, such as service technicians, for example, are provided with intuitively usable manuals for complex operations.

Confi gurator for AR
The author has a number of visualisation options with Augmented Reality: 3D objects, text fade-ins, animation, audio and video.
Content imported, tracking confi gured - the digital manual is ready.
Step 3: The digital manual
The user can load the desired scene on his mobile device, directly in the doc-umentation. The picture-in-picture fade-ins will appear as soon as he points his camera at the actual vehicle. Within just seconds the user can select the desired content and can give his full attention to the task at hand.
Content:
Information and explanations in text form
 Video recording
 Images
Safety information with auto-recording 3D data
 Wiring diagrams, technical drawings
Real objects, images and markers for tracking configuration
Step 2: Content production
Augmented Reality turns your documentation into an effi cient
digital manual. CAP integrates the production of visual and
digital content directly into the authoring process.

1 Download and start the app
Download the “CAP” app for iOS or An-droid from the App store or Google Play.
Then start the app on your smartphone or tablet.
 2 Loading AR content
Point the camera of your smartphone or tablet at the images on the following pag-es. Please make sure your camera is at a distance of approx. 20 cm to the image.
 3 Discover Augmented Reality
Follow the on-screen instructions. AR will be displayed automatically.
Discover Augmented Reality
So this is how it works:
Experience Augmented Reality live and fi nd out what possibilities
await you. On the next pages, you can try out three different exam-
ples from the CAP portfolio.
Augmented Reality in practice
Three examples from the fields of service and training give you with an idea of modern technical documentation. The combination of printed manuals and digital live scenarios provides a future-oriented expansion of traditional editorial systems.
Get to know the digital repair manual on Page 12 and get a glimpse of what’s be-hind the dashboard with an x-ray view shown in the example on Page 14. Page 16 shows you the modern way of diagnostics and inspection.
CAP is revolutionising the production of Augmented Reality and is introducing automated content creation with your existing data.
CAP Automotive: AR in production stage
With CAP Automotive - the Common-Augmented-Reality-Platform – ,
every company can take advantage of the full potential
of Augmented Reality.
You can use existing CAD, image and video data and save yourself the expense of creating new content. CAP allows you to import data directly into existing editing systems, such as xmlcompass.

Digital instructions for repairs
Imagine you have to carry out an
uncommon repair job. Normally,
you would browse through
manuals and tediously compare
printed images with the actual
components and tools.
Now see for yourself how sim-
ple these steps are with the
augmented manual. Images and
animations show the service
technician which tools and work
steps are required. In addition to
the 3D displays, the employee is
shown important safety informa-
tion and a training video.

A view inside per “x-ray”
If you have performed repair
work before, you know the typi-
cal questions:
Where are the wires?
Where is the sensor located?
What do I have to dismantle?
In the example, a view behind
the dashboard is provided via
x-ray. This makes it easy to an-
swer the above questions. Find
out for yourself what is hidden
behind the cover.

Diagnostics with Augmented Reality
After performing diagnostics,
the service technician wants to
know where the faulty compo-
nent is located. Often import-
ant information is available.
Just not where it is needed: on
the object itself.
Comfortably view essential
vehicle information with this
application on your tablet
and in real time. What makes
this special is that the data is
shown directly on the respec-
tive vehicle part.
