Market requirements
A continuous aim for performance has accompanied the development of cars
already from a beginning of the story in automotive.
The performance today is not just given by the strength of a motor, but
involves the body of a car, aerodynamics, comfort, gearbox and motor torque.
Main parameters are still weight of the body in white and motor power.
In today automotive market customers today priorise almost at same level
comfort, low fuel consumption, space and power within the criterias of the
performance.

Performance improvement
The continuous request for a clean environment leads legislators to define
always lower emission limits, limits which are hard to reach without taking
appropriate measures in automotive construction.
Cleaner motors, optimized carbration proces and lighter car bodies with
important weight reduction are requested to reach these low emissions
requests.
Weight reduction got really important in car technology, as the load on the
engine decreases of this amount of weight. In consequence the motor works
less and emissions decrease.

Lower emissions
Efficiency is defined by fuel consumption and marks the distance which can be
performed with a certain amount of fuel.
As lighter a car body, as less the load and as higher the efficiency.

Higher efficiency
Since introduction of crash tests, everybody knows that cars are safe. Today
cars deform with a crash, absorbing the energy of a hit drastically.
We further know that this deformation is programmed by car manufacturers, as
it shall perform in order to safe the life of passangers and avoid to squeeze
them in the car itself.
We expect the cars today to be safe hitting them from all directions!

Safety
Weight reduction in automotive engineering was reached using thin metal
sheets where only lower loads are expected and thick metal sheets where
higher loads are expected.
This allows to build cars stable there where they shall be strong and safe
weight where load resistance is not requested.
Tailored welded blanks are further the
perfect tool to control the deformation
in case of accident.

One step of development
As the name says, tailored welded blanks are
parts, where a thin metal sheet gets welded against a thick metal sheet.
Laserwelded.
The thin laser beam melts both materials together in the most gentle way. Heat
is applied with a thinny laser beam only there where it’s needed.
The result is a perfect coupling of the materials.

Always more complex equipment required to comply with increasing
request. Here a sample of a TWB production equipment:
