Our Foshay Tower

Adventure

On Friday night we went to dinner after the Holidazzle parade at this restaurant called Keys at Foshay (its tradition). The Foshay tower (as seen in an original drawing on the first slide) is one of the “skyscrapers” in Minneapolis. Liz and my mom went out to the lobby of the Foshay and learned we could pay $8 a piece to go up to the observation deck on the 31st floor. We love adventures so this sounded like a great idea.

The Foshay is now a hotel (see link in e-mail) and so we got a sweet hotel key card to put in the elevator to go up to the 30th floor.

Wilbur Foshay was this well-known business man and in 1929 the Foshay Tower was built to look like the Washington Monument as a sort of tribute. The 30th floor of the Foshay is now a museum so we got to learn lots of things about the building before we went outside.

For example, we learned that Wilbur Foshay was sentenced to 15 years in prison for mail fraud. FDR reduced his sentence to 5 years in 1937 then in 1947 President Truman gave him a full pardon for his wrong doings. By this time, he was residing in a small town called Salida, Colorado which, strangely enough, is about 20 minutes outside of Buena Vista (meaning I’ve actually been there before). It’s a small world.

This would be the street below from the 31st floor. Frightening but totally cool.

When my dad was younger, he remembers throwing a snowball off the top of the Foshay (which is why we decided to pay the $8 a piece to go up here) so Liz and Dad threw snow off the edge while I took about a million pictures of the view which was absolutelybreathtaking.

The Foshay Tower has some ofthe fastest elevators I’veever been on (they’re famousfor them). We went up to the 30th floor so fast we figured the only way we could possibly get to the1st floor fast would be if theelevator just dropped us. So Lizand I took pictures on the incredibly quick ride down.
