Conventions of a teaser trailer

Distribution company

In most teasers, a distribution company is often shown first. This is because a

distribution company helps promote the film and so a production company is not

needed.

Age Certificate

The bbfc determine the minimum age allowed to watch your film. This is also determined by content . This is normally shown at the end of the

trailer.

Social Media

Social media is a relatively new convention of teaser trailers. . This could include websites, twitter accounts,

hash tags, Facebook pages. This encourages the audience to find out more about the film and so spreads the word about your film. It’s a good part of a campaign as well.

Title of film

The title of the film is essential in a teaser trailer. It clearly states what the film is called and so gives

this information to the audience. It normally appears at the end of the teaser trailer in order to keep people watching it to the end. Font, colour

and background are essential in this.

Character Introduction

Character introduction is also a key feature of teaser trailers. Some movies sell themselves through big Hollywood actors and some do not. However, this is still a very important feature of teaser trailers.

Release Date

Release dates are another convention of teaser trailers. This simply lets the audience know and perhaps hypes them up for the film and so viewers will know when to

expect it. This is normally a very vague date e.g. Summer 15 or a season.

Music and Voice Overs

Music is a main feature of teaser trailers as they create a pace and rhythm. They can also be a selling point of a movie e.g.

world of wall street has a catchy song called ‘black skinhead’ by kanye west. Generally speaking, the bigger the budget on

the film, the more well known artists are involved. Appropriate music for genre is very important. A voice over

can also be added to add suspense and can either be an external voice from outside the film of be from sections of the

film.

Editing style

Teaser trailers generally use montage editing. This is because their showing a variety of

things and so in order to do this they have to use montage editing. This helps the trailer

keep a fast pace as well.

Length

The length of shots change to create suspense. E.g. towards the end of the trailer the shots get faster. Generally, shots in a teaser trailer shots last a few seconds and change. This is to keep the audiences

interest and keep them watching. It’s also to give a lot of information in a short space of time.
