THE BRIEF

The Chantry Tea Gardens is re-

launching as Tea Rooms and Inn. In

order to do this they need to

expand into the old ruins. They will need rooms for the inn and a large

open, seated indoor space for the

Tea Rooms. You must design the

building in a way that incorporates

and protects the ruins, but is also

safe to use as it is currently an ‘at

risk’ building. None of the existing structure must be knocked down as

the Chantry is a protected site.

DESIGN IDEA 1

In this design I would keep the existing layout of the building and would be adding a glass roof and glass walls. The roof design has been inspired by the images at the side but are mainly based of the drawing I made of my land art sculpture and the way that the branches bent and curved to form shapes, such as triangles. I have made this pattern more geometric for my design. The roof would be made up of various triangles in different sizes. The roof would not be entirely straight as the triangles would go in and out. Part of one of the main walls would also be made into a large window. This design would add light but may heat up the building too much in the summer.

DESIGN IDEA 2

In this design the layout of the building changes slightly as I would add a large glass addition that would go across the left side of the chantry and cantilever though the gap of the section on the right side. The roof would be similar to that in the photo on the left but the deign would be based on the rocks on the beach. Similar additions would be added to the rest of the Chantry but they would appear as tilted rectangles. Asmacati Shopping Centre

DESIGN IDEA 3

This design is based on the history of the building and the surrounding landscape. The design is base on gothic architecture as that was style of the time period the chantry was originally built. Inside the chantry would be the addition of fan vaulting which would have a branch motif. This motif would be carried throughout the building on the roof of the inn portion and on the windows, which would

also be in a gothic arch.Gloucester Cathedral

CHOSEN IDEA

I have decided to use idea three as I feel it is the

most developed design and also the one which links

with nature the most. I now need to develop the idea

to finalise a design for the fan vault and a floor plan. I

have researched the works of Gaudi and the way

that he incorporated organic forms into his designs.

However I think researching sculpture might also

prove useful as I would like the vaulting to have a

sculptural quality.
