Magazines: Seventeen

By Sabrina Del Rey

Picture at a Newsstand

GQ was the most noticeable magazine when I first

walked up to the newsstand due to where the

magazine was placed, it was right at eye level for

me when I walked to that section. In my genre

Vanity Fair first caught my eye due to the fact that

it was white in comparison to all the magazines

around it.I thought that cosmopolitan had the best

photography on the cover as that easily drew my

eye in to it. I chose my magazine because I felt it

had the best design for me to be inspired from. It

has many coverlines but manages not to look to

cluttered. The GQ british edition was also at the

newsstand and the yellow main coverline

immediately caught my attention as it is suppose

to. I thought seventeen once again had a great

table of contents for me to study for my genre. I

personally thought Vogue had the most interesting

articles out of them all.

Reflection on Newsstand Visit

I feel I greatly benefitted from the visit

to a newsstand because I have a

better idea of some different articles

for fashion magazines and am more

educated on how a table of contents

should be laid out. For example, I

might draw inspiration from one of

Seventeen magazine's table of

contents pictured on the right.

Inspirational Magazine

This magazine is inspirational to me because I have

read it before and I like the way it is laid out. Also, I

decided to pick a special edition of the magazine

since this would probably be a more popular issue.

Overall, I like how this magazine appeals to my eye

and while at the newsstand with another girl who

falls in this target demographic that was the first one

she was drawn to of the genre. Obviously this

magazine is eye pleasing and falls within my genre

so it was a good choice.

Inspirational Magazine Contents

The magazine I read was all about getting ready for prom

and what to do after prom. It included tips on makeup and

hair and showed many different prom dresses. It also

advertised many free dresses that people who purchased

the magazine had opportunities to win. One of the main

problems with this magazine unfortunately was that it did

not contain a two page spread that I found. There were

articles but most of them had about an equal text to

picture ratio. The target demographic for this magazine is

definitely teenage girls most being of high school ages

(15-18).

Observations about magazine

In general, for the cover image of Seventeen I’ve found it for be a modeling

shot of a celebrity usually sitting or from the waist up. The celebrity being the

main focus and the clothes being much less important. Most appear to be taken

in a studio however ones like the summer edition were taken elsewhere. The

masthead of the magazine does change colors quite often however it appears

to favor yellow as opposed to others. Also, the font remains consistent in the

masthead. The magazine seems to format itself around the main image the

fonts of coverlines and such always changing.

This was my favorite out of the magazines and the

most inspirational to me out of the others. I wish I

had been able to buy this magazine instead since I

really like the layout and how each article catches

your eye well.

Common Elements

All of the table of contents seem to have images along with the articles. They

all have three categories to separate the articles. They are always the same

three categories: Fashion, Celeb Chat, and Beauty. The numbers are always

displayed the same way as well. In general, they are extremely similar and it is

obvious they use the same template for all their tables of contents. This is a

very affective way to help readers easily find the articles they wish to read.

Also, the pictures help to make the magazine more “fun” for teens.

Similarities in two page spreads

The two articles that I picked were not very similar. One was about

fashion while the other was about Celebrity gossip. They however both

have many images along with the article also different parts of the text

have different fonts and styles to catch the readers attention. They are

much less formal than say Times Magazine because the audiences are

very different. I feel as though this appeals well to the teen girl genre.

Reflection

I feel as though this experience has greatly helped me get an idea for hoe to

format my magazine. I was starting to doubt my genre due to the fact that I

was unsure what to write but I feel more prepared to complete the two page

spread. I plan to use this particular magazine as inspiration for my own in the

future.
