This school magazine uses a medium close-up image of a student in their school, as most school magazines do. However this school has chosen not to stress the uniform to the target market, maintaining a relax feel to the magazine appealing to the target market. This can be reflected in the headline to the left of the image which says “10 way to customise your boring school uniform.” The model is also smiling unlike example 2 where she is working. The model smiling also gives the magazine a relaxed and positive atmosphere. The headlines shown on the front cover reflects that the magazine is informal appealing to the target market. The subject used is something many student may like to do, to stand out in their boring uniform, therefore this would draw readers into the magazine. The school slogan is shown under the mast head is a bold colour to catch the eye of the reader, it is also using the same font in which was used for the mast head. This reflect what the slogan says as the font resembles a bubble like form which looks like it is floating off the page. The school slogan is also used on this magazine to relate the magazine back to the school. The slogan also reflects to the students if they aim high in their life and work for what they want they can do anything. The mast head is big and bold catching the eye of the reader due to the visual hierarchy. The mast head is unusual for a magazine with the word use of “fly.” This then attracts readers as they are intrigued into what the magazine is about. We realise that the mast head actually links in with the slogan which is just below. The main mast head used contrast from the back due to the bright yellow colour. The readers eye is instantly attracted to the main headline due to the size of the font, and the font used, to make the text come out of the page. The wording used also will attract the reader as all student experience stress due to exams. The headline that states “win £100 worth of revision book, appeals to the student target market but also entices them into the magazine as they can win something that will save them money and will help with their studies. The font used is a brilliant way to make the magazine have a sophisticated appeal. However the blue writing is difficult to read on the green jumper of the model. To improve I would change the colour of the font to ensure that it stands out from the background and catches the eye of the target market. The contrasting colours used within the ‘YOUR FREE SCHOOL MAGAZINE’, ensures that the readers eye is drawn to it and see that the magazine is free. This entices the person to get the magazine and look inside as it is ‘free’. It is bold and bright but also has an effect, it is jumping out the page, ensuring that when the reader first glances at the magazine it instantly catches their attention and makes them pick it up as it is ‘free’ The word ‘FREE’ is also in a brighter colour so that it stand out from the other text.

The contents page is bright, bold and is well organised with the headlines easily readable. This ensures that the reader can see each individual articles with ease in the magazine. However the only feature that is similar to the front cover is the text colours. This is a great floor to the contents as it does not relate to the cover and will confuse readers.

The black back ground is a bold and basic but allows the text on the page to stand out and catch the eye of the reader. The black back ground ensures that the contents page is multi sex when combined with the other colours. If a white back ground was used then the magazine would be more of a feminine contents page and limiting the amount of readers that would look at the magazine.

The pattern used behind the text is bold and eye catching and adds a sophisticated feel to the magazine appealing to the target market. The pattern also brings an aspect to the magazine making it also look young and modern However I think a less bright or bold colour should have been used, as the eye is draw to the pattern and not the articles. It also makes the page look more aesthetically pleasing.

‘Contents’ is in a bold and bright, catching the eye of the reader and educating them that this is the contents page. This is a good idea as it instantly tells the reader what this page is and entices the reader into the magazine. The position of the title, the top of the page in the middle, ensures that the reader will instantly see the title due to the visual hierarchy,

When first glancing at this contents, as a reader I didn’t think that it gave page numbers to the articles shown on the contents page. However when looking further into the contents page the page number are placed at the left hand side of the article. I do not think this is a very good idea as it may confuse the readers and may discourage them from reading further into the magazine. Therefore to improve I believe that these page numbers should be placed at the right hand side of the articles, consequently not confusing the readers.

The article that were seen on the front cover are highlighted in a light blue on this contents page. This is a brilliant positive toward the magazine as it not only relates the pages together, but also helps the reader to find the articles that would have enticed them to the magazine.

The articles used in the contents pages not only keep to the school magazine criteria, but also ensures that the magazine greatly appeals to their target audience. This is a good idea by the magazine as it will engage their target market further into the magazine and fulfilling its purpose to be read and to give information educating the readers .

The main images used on this front cover is a medium shot of a school pupil working hard. This is resembled by her head in her hand and the grave concentration on the models face. This image is used to be a role model to the whole school, it is meant to reflect what most pupils the school feels should be doing. However this image gives a negative atmosphere to the, but shows the stress that revision can bring.

The role of film effect is used to with hold more photos for the front cover of this magazine. With in this effect the picture reflect a calm and positive atmosphere to her school, showing someone smiling, two people working together, a group of friends talking and someone doing work on the computers. The effect and images used are a great way for the magazine to resemble what the school is like, this is a positive for the magazine and balances the main picture and the interpretation some people may get from it.

The mast head is in a contrasting colour to ensure that it stands out in the page, the font of the text also helps this effect. The colour used is bright and bold instantly catching the eye of the reader. However the size is not big enough to fully grab the attention of the reader and the font also needs to be more bold to help the eye fall on it. However the position of the text is excellent as due to the visual hierarchy people will instantly see the headline.

The bold blue background is a bright colour that makes the magazine stand out to others, it also greatly appeals to the target audience as it is a young colour due to the boldness. It also ensures that the texts used will stand out and be readable. It also reflects a sophisticated look to the magazine. The blue background ensures that the magazine is multi sex appeal to the maximum amount of readers.

The headings are of good size and can be seen easily, but the font of the text is unreadable as seen on the image. This is a great negative towards the magazine, as if the text is unreadable then people will not buy the item, therefore creating a loss in profit. Therefore to improve I suggest that the text being made bolder and less formal to ensure that the target market is met. However I do not like the position of the headings as the eye is not instantly drawn to them, therefore the magazine will loose readers as the headlines are in the wrong position to entice the target market

The text used on the role of film to reflect the images and give them a meaning that may not have come across without the text. The text is also white to ensure that it standout form the pictures but only works on some pictures therefore a selection of images should be used with the same colour base.

Overall the front cover has its positives and its negatives. If the text was put in a more readable font and the position of the heading were changed with that of the image I believe that it will fulfil all requirements of a front cover and appeal to its target market

This contents page has used the same background, the mast head , font and text colour from the front cover. This is excellent of the contents page as it links it to the front cover but keeps a constant theme throughout the magazine, which will appeal to the target market as if the front cover enticed them into the magazine then the contents should follow the same positive energy.

The picture used on the contents page ensures that the reader instantly get a relaxed and happy atmosphere due to the model is smiling . The size of the image also ensures that the reader instantly see the image. However I believe that the image is over sized and takes the attention from the text which tells reader what articles ate within the magazine. The image also relates the contents page to the front cover which is a excellent point to the magazine as it ensures the same theme running throughout.

The magazines mast head is shown on the contents page, I do not like this at all, as it not the contents pages role to have this shown. Although it could in some aspects link the page to the front cover the colour scheme and the text should be enough to relate the two pages together. However the attention of the target market will not be drawn to it as it is in a faded effect.

The heading ‘contents’ is in a medium sized font and is surrounded by two black lines to ensure that the readers eye is drawn to it instantly. The font used also helps the text to appear to be jumping out of the page. However the colour of the font it not bold or bright enough therefore will not always catch the readers eye.

The text colours used are bright bold and eye catching, this is because they are all contrasting colours to the background. This is an excellent way to entice the reader into what article they will be reading about in the magazine . I like the idea of having different coloured text for different articles seen the magazine.

The page numbers are seen clearly seen by the side of the articles, therefore this was a good idea created by the editor as it means that if a reader found a n article they would want to read they could easily find the page number. However contrastingly i do not think that the articles that have been put in this magazine suit the target market, therefore this will not engage the reader preventing them from reading further into the magazine.

As seen on the front cover the font of the text is unreadable, therefore discouraging readers to engage into the magazine. Therefore to improve i suggest that the magazine uses a bolder, more eye catching and readable font like century gothic , to ensure that the text used is readable and will catch the eye of the reader and will appeal to the target market.

The mast head it a bright bold and eye catching colour and font that is easily read able. This will therefore catch the eye of the reader and persuade them to pick up the magazine. The size of the text is also big and eye catching ensuring that the target markets eye is instantly drawn to the mast head. The position of the mast head is also brilliant as due to the visual hierarchy the readers eye will be drawn to the title encouraging the target market to engage into the magazine.

The heading colour and font relates to the title and ensure that everything on the font cover links together and looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye, which will also encourage people into the magazine. The position of the text is also brilliant as they are surrounding the model which not only draws the readers eye to the model but also to the heading, engaging the reader into the magazine.

The heading names are informal and will relate to the target market, therefore enticing the reader to the magazine and persuading them to look through it. Such phrases such as “thank god for Fridays” will interact with the reader not only making them want to read the article but also getting on their level of understanding. This is a great positive to the magazine as it hugely appeals to the target market/

The model in the middle of the page looks relaxed and happy and reflect that atmosphere to the reader. It does not show someone being hard at work but someone smiling therefore resembling that they are happy. This will appeal to the reader as this magazine could help them get away from the reality of a school life that may be stressful and help them think of the positives . The Image also over laps the mast head resembling that students happiness is a lot more important than the stress of work.

The effect surrounding the advert for paintballing instantly catches the reader attention due to the bright bold colour, that is not used on the rest of the front cover. The effect of this therefore persuades people to go paint balling as it is a way to get rid of stress and have a good time with friends. However as the advertised stand out on the page due to the colour,, it draws the eye away from some of main articles that may draw the reader into the magazine. Also the “lets go paintballing” is in a very slim small font making it hard for the target market to read the text. Therefore to improve the text should be made more readable

“The ultimate spring break” should be the main heading however it is in a slim text making it difficult not only for the reader to notice but also read. This heading should be bold and in the bright yellow that is seen throughout the front cover to ensure that readers easily spot it and to guarantee that it is easily readable. The position of it is also not helping the target market to notice it due to the visual hierarchy, therefore should be placed more in the bottom left hand corner or in the bottom right hand corner to ensure the user instantly reads it and is persuaded to read the article.

Page 6: Magazine Research

Like the first contents page seen this page also uses a different background colour to that of the front cover, this then means that a theme is not seen throughout the magazine and the reader may get confused. Therefore to improve i believe that the same colour scheme should be used throughout the magazine to ensure that the magazine is full connected together.

The heading contents is in a bold black which is contrasting to that of the background to ensure that it stands out and catching the eye of the reader. The position of the text is also brilliant as due to the visual hierarchy this will ensure that this is the first thing that a reader will se therefore instantly knowing what page they are on. However I do believe it should be a little bigger.

The double page contents ensures that all images and words used within the contents page is not all crammed into one page making it look untidy and unprofessional. It also ensures that all information is taken into account as the page are mainly made up of images , with very few words. The words that are written ensure that the reader wants to read onto the magazine due to the articles that are within the magazine.

The images used are eye catching as they all will interact with the reader as they all either do the images seen or want to. The variation of images also ensure that the target market do not get bored with the images but also that they relate to the articles advertised within the magazine. The images also are colour and bright instantly catching the eye of the reader. This is a great positive to the magazine as it ensures that it is appealing to their target market.

Although the article reflect that of a relaxed atmosphere that may help the reader escape reality the text used its a slim small text that is very difficult to read as seen by the image. The subheading above although are in a bigger font need to be made bold, to ensure they are eye catching and reader for the user.

The page numbers are confusing however, as at the glance of the contents page, you as a reader do not think that page numbers have been given but after later inspection they are found to be the numbers before the articles. I do not like this idea there in my opinion believe that the page number should be moved an put after the articles that are in the magazine to ensure confusion is not caused.
