What is Intertextuality?Intertextuality refers to the process of creating references to any kind of media text via another media text. In other words. Intertextuality essentially means for a type of media (film, television, music etc.) to pay homage to another media text.

Types of Intertextuality:

• Pastiche • Parody• Homage• Calque

• Translation• Hybridity• Bricolage

Pastiche:A pastiche is something that copies or mimics elements of another works style, possibly in a humorous way but usually just as an affectionate nod to another artists work. While the artist may have made the pastiche in homage, the work itself does not necessarily make any points favorable or unfavorable about the original. In a sense, it is a collection of references. An example for Pastiche is Marilyn Monroe performing in film Gentlemen prefer blondes and Madonna doing a similar thing in her music video in Material Girl. Madonna wears a similar pink dress as Marilyn and has pretty much the same setting in the background also Madonna’s hair is also alike like Monroe’s

Parody:Parody is the practice of copying the mannerisms, style or appearance of a work or its author’s voice to make a point about the work. Parody is generally gentler than satire, it is often good-natured or affectionate. It only attacks the style and content of a fictional work and not real life events. It often exaggerates features of the original. An example for this sort is from a famous youtuber named Bart Baker doing a parody of Uptown funk ft Bruno Mars

Homage:Homage is a way of giving respect to an existing performer or media text. Characters may adapt a similar look and style to pay tribute to the celebrities in the past. An example of this is in Justin Timberlake’s music video Take back the Night paying a tribute to Michael Jackson as the music video features some on-the-street flair seen in Michael Jackson’s iconic Billie Jean video

Claque:A word or a phrase that is borrowed from a foreign language or text. An example is from Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink's song, Lady Marmalade, where they draw on the French burlesque show of Moulin Rouge which inspires the entire video.

Translation:Translation is when a message of a text is changed into another form but having drawn on the message. An example is from Uptown funk ft Bruno Mars and youtuber Bart Baker singing totally different lyrics.

Bricolage:Bricolage is a collection or collage of different media text which forms one text.

Hybridity:Hybrid forms are said to level hierarchies of taste.
