DESCRIPTION
NewsTrain instructor Kathy Kieliszewski discusses why journalists should do video and what makes for good video. She also details five video story forms: (1) the clip, (2) the "look live," (3) the uber-clip, (4) the quick-turn package, and (5) the enterprise package. Kieliszewski, the Detroit Free Press' director of photo and video, gave this presentation as part of the NewsTrain workshop in Austin, Texas, on Aug. 22-23, 2014. Please see associated handouts: Five Types of Video, Is There Video with That?, and "Look Live" Assignment. Why do we really do video?
•Enhances our journalism
• Immediate -- reaches the
audience now
•Offers an entry into a
developing story
•Sometimes video is the best
way to tell the story
Is there video?
• Is there action?
•What are the visuals?
• Is there emotion?
•Are there moments?
•Are there surprises?
•Who is telling the story?
• Is there a narrative?
•How much access do you have?
•Who is your audience?
• Is it exclusive?
•What’s the purpose of the video
story?
•What else does the person need to
do?
•What is the deadline?
Video story forms
The Clip •Needs little set-up
• It can be ours or someone else’s.

Good “Look Live” •Explain, don’t narrate
•Use your notes
•Keep it brief
•Closes with a look ahead
•Don’t say what we see
The Exercise
You need to do a “look live.” Team up with a partner(s) to
shoot your look live. You can
either do the voice-over version
or an on-camera standup.

Uber-clip or Package
A short video, usually 1-2 minutes,
which includes a sound bite and b-roll
footage that are combined together in
the edit. This package is usually a
simple feature or news story with a good
character and interesting visuals that
adds an interesting element to a Web
story when the reporter/photographer
lacks the time for a more involved story.

The Quick Turn
A video, up to 3-4 minutes,
which involves more than one
interview, natural sound and b-
roll footage. This type of video
requires a good amount of
editing and often needs good
characters, strong visuals and a
narrative story.

Enterprise package
A longer-form video involving multiple
interviews, b-roll from a variety of
situations, possible narration and
natural sound. The length of this video
is determined by the content and the
story being told. This is equivalent to
the large newspaper project: either
investigative, news or feature.
The Exercise
Read the budget lines and
determine the visuals, the
characters, and the story line. In
addition, decide what type of video
form do you think is possible from
each story.
Is there video?
1) Slippery roads are causing havoc for the morning commute across the region. A
reporter is sent out to cover the chaos and is expected to post a story and a video
before the news expires.
2) Detroit Tigers baseball players will participate in a Latin dance competition to
become the MVD - Most Valuable Dancer – as part of the baseball team’s spring
caravan. In addition to the video, we expect photos to be the centerpiece or main
story on the front of the sports section and a photo gallery for the Web. The event is
at 6 p.m.; the print deadline is 8:30, and the photographer’s shift ends at 10 p.m.
3) Disgraced mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is being released from prison at midnight
after serving 99 days behind bars. Detroit’s mayor lied under oath in a whistleblower
lawsuit that claimed he had two police officers fired because he feared they would
learn of an affair he was having with his chief of staff. The print deadline has passed,
so you are feeding the website for the morning audience. Expect a big media circus.
4) The 100-foot ice curtains that form on the cliffs of Grand Island near Munising
are among the most spectacular beauties of Michigan. That’s why more than 400
climbers showed up for the annual Ice Fest. A photographer and reporter have
traveled to the town for the weekend and will be shooting all day Friday for a
Sunday story that is accompanied by photos and a photo gallery.
