Gozo is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of the Southern European country of Malta; after the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. Gozo was the location for Calypso's island in the 1997 Hallmark miniseries The Odyssey based on Homer's epic poem

Xlendi is a village in Malta situated in the south west of the island of Gozo

Maltese Freshwater Crab

The name Xlendi is probably derived from the word "xelandion", a type of Byzantine vessel which may have anchored in the port. Caroline Cave is a cave on the right cliffs of the bay. This cave could only be reached by stairs.

The not developed area around Xlendi is home from a lot of flora and fauna species some of them rare. One can name the Seagulls, the Maltese Freshwater Crab and the 'Widnet il-Bahar”, Cheirolophus crassifolius, the Maltese Centaury, Maltese Rock-centaury or Widnet il-Ba ar, is a species of flowering plant in the ħAsteraceae family.Maltese Rock-centaury is endemic to Malta, where it has been the national plant of Malta since 1973.

Il-Fontana is a village on Gozo Island originated from the suburb of Victoria on the Rabat-Xlendi road. Most of the fishermen that operated from the fishing village of Xlendi lived in Fontana.

Its local name is "It-Triq tal-G ajn", (the way to the ħspring), and it took its name from a spring at the bottom of the road leading to Xlendi, known locally as "l-G ajn il-ħKbira", (the big spring).

Arched shelters were built in the sixteenth century over the springs for the convenience of people when washing their clothes. A very old irrigation system made up from stone gutters constantly brings water from a spring situated in the Ker em part of the ċvalley.

Weaving, embroidery and lace-making were encouraged, often by the Church. Life in Gozo and much of rural Malta was relatively harsh and craft industries became a main source of income for rural families.
