Windows Communication Foundation

The Windows Communication Foundation (or WCF), previously known as "Indigo", is a runtime and a set of APIs in the .NET Framework for building connected, service-oriented applications.

Windows Presentation Foundation

Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is Microsoft's development tool for Web applications and rich client applications. With WPF, developers can use XAML, the Extensible Application Markup Language, to create custom controls, graphics, 3D images and animations that are not available in traditional HTML implementations.

• Resolution IndependenceWPF Application is resolution independent. The Resolution of WPF is always same with any type of screen resolution.

• Separation of ConcernsIn WPF application, there is two part appearance of UI and its behavior. Hence you can very easily customize the look of controls and its functionality.

• Add Control inside a ControlNow you can add a control inside another control. Eg. if you want to add a textbox inside a button then you can do this easily.

• Different types of LayoutGrid, Dock Panel, Stack Panel & Canvas.

• 3D & 2D Graphics and AnimationIn WPF, you can use controls as 3D layout or 2D layout. In this, you can also use animation, media file and graphics. It supports playing video or audio file supported by Media player.

• It is interoperable with respect to other services. This is in sharp contrast to .NET Remoting in which both the client and the service must have .Net.

• WCF services offer enhanced reliability as well as security in comparison to ASMX (Active Server Methods) web services.

• Implementing the security model and binding change in WCF do not require a major change in coding. Just a few configuration changes is required to meet the constraints.

• WCF has built-in logging mechanism whereas in other technologies, it is essential to do the requisite coding.

• WCF has integrated AJAX and support for JSON (JavaScript object notation).

• It offers scalability and support for up-coming web service standards.

• It has a default security mechanism which is extremely robust.
